Re: Bridge settings

OK, thanks.

But what's the answer to Qs 2 and 3?

Are there any special problems, or steps to be taken, in order to bridge two wireless interfaces on the same device? Can it even be done?

Re: Dual Chain

OK. Specific question/s: For a while we're going to have a QRT at one end of the link and the old 'single-chain' wireless and (vertical polarity) antenna at the other end. Do we need to turn one chain off on the QRT or will having the 'other', ie horizontal, chain on still add some dB to the signal?...

I understand that a bridge essentially just accepts a packet on one interface and spits it out the other so that routing decisions shouldn't be necessary, and that indeed the int...

I've spent a chunk of the community's cash on some QRTs which should arrive tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to get them to work.

Re: I thought I understood it but....

IMHO you have to have way for router to see what route routes where. But only at a 'next step' level. Router B doesn't need to know if the route is via D1 or D2, just that the next step is C1. Just think about it as adding 2 addresses from same subnet to 2 different interfaces - you do not have any...

I don't see how either plan would have made the switch between backhauls any different. That would happen at router B? You have routers B1 and B2 both connected to A. pppoe is layer2 so you can't route it. You have to use bridge.
In other words it can't be done. The PC is running Windows ME (with RASPPPoE available) and the LAN side of the modem is a simple switch, if that. Bridging such a setup is not possible.

Re: Yours and mine gateways.

Thanks Normis, that looks to be along the lines of what we want tho' I'll need to study the Wiki entry closely to actually make sense of it, and will probably have to take my socks off so that I can count on my toes as well. Nice - and sensible - as it would be load balancing in any meaningful sense...

Re: Yours and mine gateways.

tombrdfrd66 - Sure - but basically what you are asking for is policy based routing - it's in the wiki.... If the wiki doesn't do it for you then paste your config up here and any other relative 'data' and we'll see what we can do.... 'Fraid the wiki didn't do it for me, but then nothing much does t...

Yours and mine gateways.

We are a non-profit community-owned wireless co-operative boldly bringing broadband where anyone with any sense would fear to tread. We're having to expand our bandwidth to meet demand and are installing a second adsl modem at our gateway in a distant city - and have a problem that defeats my notes ...

Where has the memory gone?

I've a spare RB433 sitting beside me doing just one thing. It has no wireless cards, no routing, no ppp. It has just one ethernet connection to the network. It's running User-Manager and keeping track of accounting for just one RADIUS client - just one client on one server, According to system resou...

Re: Wireless over water

Hi guys, thanks for the advice. I'll check all these things, tho' I nowhere use LC400 longer than 1m. Watching the client radio's advanced status in Winbox this morning (as it was up) the tx/rx was pretty steady around -85/-77 and signal to noise a solid 26/27dB. rx CCQ was constant in the 90/94% ra...

Re: Wireless over water

-84db is not good. The Senao card needs about -75db for a 54m connection. Can you switch to b-mode only for a test? That gives you better sensitivity. We've been using b-mode from the outset and we only really need 5MBps transfer as this is primarily a link to an adsl outlet for internet. The 8602-...

Re: Wireless over water

You probably need to get further back from the shore for the link endpoints. When radios are near the water, tidal reflection are serious. Move both ends back 1/4 mile from the shore, and things will not fluctuate as much. Go for all the antenna gain you can get as well. see the attached file for m...

Re: Wireless over water

If this is a point-to-multipoint setup, it would be illegal here in the U.S. Too much EIRP on the 24db end. It's likely illegal here, too, but we're far from the madding crowd and have the aether to ourselves while hopefully the authorities are too busy sorting out the squabbles over access to the ...

Re: Wireless over water

All your suggestions are valid and useful, I'm just not 100% sure the problem lies with the effect of the water. In fact I'm head-bangingly baffled. Earlier this am I was logged on to the AP watching the registration table, and this particular client was appearing on the table for a few seconds and ...

Re: Wireless over water

If you insist on using 2.4 try using the SR2 or XR2 - 8602's are junk. I'll ultimately do whatever is necessary but tho' it's the Subscriber's money I don't want to spend any more than is necessary. I have been harbouring dark suspicions about the 8602 as I've had to pull a couple out of working in...

Re: Wireless over water

Thanks Normis. I'll download the Radio mobile thing and learn to fly it, tho' it looks a bit hairy. The mid-point Fresnel zone radius on this link is 12m so it will be pretty close to the water if not touching it. According to MT's link possibility calculator I should be getting tx/rx readings in th...

Wireless over water

I'm having problems with the link shown on the attached .jpg and would welcome any advice. The link is 2.79 miles (4.5km) over water all the way. The southern end is about 15m above the water, the northern end around 5m. The Southern end is running ap-bridge with a Senao EMP-8602+S putting out 17dB ...

WDS for Dummies

Here's a probably straightforward situation which takes me out of my comfort zone as network engineer! I've some clients currently connected to an Access Point X which has a backhaul to the Internet gateway. I've another couple of potential clients who don't have line of sight to X, but there is a p...

Re: Bouncing Traffic?

Stumbled quite serendipitously over the answer - pretty rare series of events, I admit, but I'll confess all here in the hope it might help someone in the future. Was setting up a new server at the Gateway with Ubuntu Server, administering it remotely with Webmin. For some reason using Webmin's comm...

Bouncing Traffic?

I've noticed that with no other traffic on the system I am registering a constant 97kbps/124 packets per second both RX and TX on a point-to-point backhaul link, ie the tx/rx readings at both ends are identical. See image. At each end is an RB532 with nstream and polling on. No interface upstream or...
