Should MT focus more on new functions or long term stable release

7.15.2 7.15.3 → 7.15.x Long Term
or
7.16 7.17 7.18

New functions? ROS returned to media center edition with those new functions.

@Jotne,
I hope you meant 7.15, etc., and not 17.15, otherwise it will be a very long time ))))))))))

I’d love to see a v7 LTS release.

It’s been almost two years since we had a “contemporary” LTS release (it was in v6 around release date of v7). Since then many of us are doomed to running v7 due to various reasons and we don’t have possibility to run an LTS version.

I can remember that MT indicated that v7 LTS will come when all v6 functionality is ported over to v7. But this point seems to be a moving target since there are many new features but porting older ones seems to be slowing down. Note to MT staffers: this is my subjective feeling and there’s no point in arguing it. I’ll change my feeling when I’ll see progress.

I would assume that maintaining a LTS branch, backporting just fixes (bug/security) from stable means quite some effort for MT developers right now, still adding features and look at the long changelogs. Seems like they still keep focus improving the product until the reach a point where they can “branch off” a LTS tree again.

We need both stability and new feature focus specially on service provider just my humbly opinion

My vote is for a stable long-term release on par with ROS v6, then new features.

Both needed! Just thinking about stuff which was recently added or still badly missed by some, like : HW QoS, WIFI improvements (better performance w. new drivers, WPA3, Roaming, etc…), IPv6 fast track (or sthg like VectorPacketProcessing), MPLS HW, device controler (more than CapsMan) …
Of course, those new features are only useful if they run on a stable ROS.

Wrong syllable, request is for more MT dev and testing staff.

The title is

Long Term release or new functions?

not AND

Why did you put “Both”??? It completely ruins the survey…
You can’t have everything in life, so just the “not sure” option was enough…

Obviously the inclusion of the option that takes away any effort of choice from people, proportionately, ruins everything.

Whoever answered “Dont care” (only one at the moment I write) is the most intelligent and honest of the group.
MikroTik doesn’t give a damn about us, otherwise the 7.2 long-term already existed for years…

The forum is full of polls made by the staff or other users, they have never led to anything

CEO MikroTik doesn’t give a damn about what users write here on the forum,
and not even for the staff to report the complaints to him (or the person responsible for hardware choices)…
An example above all: continue to use on 2018, and later, 16M flash

I thought it was a joke poll LOL, Like, I have nothing better to do today and thought this would be funny.
Concur, with the neighbour of the Pope

It was not a joke

My suggestion is that MT should keep a version, like 7.15 and keep it to it becomes long term in 7.15.xx
At the same time there can be 7.16, 7.17 etc and the select a new version like 7.18 and keep it to long term

Now you get 7.14 7.14.1, the jumps to 7.15 7.15.1 and next is 7.16

I did have a small hope for 7.13 long term since we did get it up to 7.13.5

Your energy is better spent sending me liquid hops from your local brewery.

Here you have some

We’d really appreciate the release of a 7.x LTS asap (I mean, REALLY!). It doesn’t mean releasing new feature is not important, but at a certain point, it would be wise to slow down (I didn’t say “stop”!) the dev of new features in favour of bugfixes and stability from time to time. Then, the focus can be on new features again for a while.

LTS is just a name. If we rename 7.15.1 to long-term, will it become more stable?

We’ve had this discussion already a couple months ago:
http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/routeros-7-1-5-long-term-dead-end/159564/62

And yes, at least IMHO it doesn’t need to be perfect, so according to the official doc, officially renaming the most stable, less buggy version as LTS would be a great starting point.

I mean honestly, Mikrotik is extremely customer-oriented, regularly releasing really innovative hardware and taking customer feedbacks into account. Why doesn’t the same apply on the software side? People have been craving for an LTS version to be released for over 2 years… (OK you certainly have more accurate info than me, maybe the people like me asking for an LTS are only the minority and I am biased - I can’t tell that)

Anyway, it seems TO ME from what I’ve read so far that quite a lot of people (me incl.) would he happy to see an official LTS soon. Again, it doesn’t have to be perfect, but at least the most stable version to date (and please no BS…really take the most proven, stable version as a starting point).

Ur not listening. There is not enough staff to do all.
If they apply resources doing LTS effort, then those resources are not available on other work.
The answer is more staff, and that aint going to happen unless the lack of staff is hindering profit margins.
Remember people are the most expensive resource.

Ur not listening.

???

On the contrary! The title says “Long Term release or new functions” => my personal answer is “Long Term release”.

If they apply resources doing LTS effort, then those resources are not available on other work.

. Exactly. Acknowledged and I would personally indeed prioritise the release of an LTS over other things.

The answer is more staff

=> THAT was not part of the initial question and besides the point! :sunglasses:

If your boss gives you some budget and tell you that you can use it however you want for your projects, then you can decide if you put it on project A, project B or split it on both. But you can’t just go back to your job and say you want more money. (well at least most of the time it won’t work)

Economics, reality vs wishes of naive software trained folks.
If the lack of LTS is hurting the bottom line, finite resources will be shifted or a case could be made for more resources.
As stated these polls are a waste of time and are not used to direct or influence any level of management at MT.
If you have a $2 million purchase of equipment planned/committed and you need something specific, I am sure something can be arranged.
Money talks, not pontificating with diagrams.
