RB5900: Sporadic SFP link failures

Hi,

I recently bought an RB5009UPr+S+ which is my main device for Internet access. A fine device but what plagues me is this:

 16:51:37 interface,info sfp-sfpplus1 link down
 16:51:37 pppoe,ppp,info pppoe-dnsnet: terminating... - disconnected
 16:51:37 pppoe,ppp,info pppoe-dnsnet: disconnected
 16:51:37 pppoe,ppp,info pppoe-dnsnet: initializing...
 16:51:38 pppoe,ppp,info pppoe-dnsnet: connecting...
 16:51:38 pppoe,ppp,info pppoe-dnsnet: terminating...
 16:51:38 pppoe,ppp,info pppoe-dnsnet: disconnected
 16:51:38 pppoe,ppp,info pppoe-dnsnet: initializing...
 16:51:38 pppoe,ppp,info pppoe-dnsnet: connecting...
 16:51:38 interface,info sfp-sfpplus1 link up (speed 1G, full duplex)
 16:51:39 pppoe,ppp,info pppoe-dnsnet: authenticated
 16:51:39 pppoe,ppp,info pppoe-dnsnet: connected

With the current firmware version 7.10 this occurs about 2-3 times per day which is significantly better than the 10-20 times per day with version 7.9.2. The SFP module is a Zyxel GPON ONU module (PMG3000-D20B) which I also, suspecting it to be defective, switch with an FS GPON-ONU-34-20BI module.

Config-wise I did not divert from any default settings for the SFP+ module. On top of it runs PPPoE which drops out when the device somehow seems to think the link was lost (most of the time this takes place in a second)

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Hi, I have exactly the same situation but it even looks worse. I was also looking into it now, so any help, update, advice is appreciated. What I don’t know is whether it is an issue of the MikroTik router or the Zyxel module. I was looking for an updated version of Zyxel firmware but had no luck. Were you looking for that as well? However, it is good to know that it was even more often with previous versions of the routerOS software.
Cheers,
Ecoxme

Why not upgrade to 7.13.4? Also be sure you update routerboard firmware as well.

Hey, I have the same issue here with the RB5009… did anyone find any solution? I’m on 7.16 it was worse before i upgraded from 7.13 but still this is not usable…

Works without any issue with the Provided ONT by my provider but if i use the Zyxel ONT the spf link goes down and the PPPOE connection dies. Any idea or news about this would be helpful.

Thanks,
Tom

This is how it looks like in the logs for me:

I have the same issue with my RB5009. Any new information about this?

I have managed to get it Stable for my Fiber line after doing the following things:

Ethernet:

  • Auto negation needs to be on but only advertise 1G baseX

  • Flow controll off

SFP:

  • Rate select: low

Hope this helps you as well.

I am having the same issues on a L009UiGS (version 7.16), with the PMG3000-D20B on firmware version V1.00(ABVJ.1)b1e. (provided by Telekom)
I cannot find the rate select option on the sfp anywhere, nor am I able to log in on the thing over ssh.
Without autoconf on I don’t get a PPPoE session at all, only enabling 1G baseX doesn´t really seem to improve anything.

I now have Rate select on low as well, took me a bit to find it under the “sfp” settings in the Mikrotik. I expected this to be in the SFP’s actual webui settings
Sadly this does not seem to fix the issue for me

I experienced this issue after and update from 7.12.1 to 7.17
Reverted back to 7.12.1 and this issue occurs only 1-2 times/day instead of 5-6/hours on 7.17.

How did you solve the problem? I have exactly the same situation on FS GPON-ONU-34–20BI
Changing the firmware version or interface settings does not help:(

I use a Mikrotik RB5009UG+S+ with a Zyxel PMG3000-D20B module.

I also had problems with the link going down sporadically.

The following helped me:
I changed the speed from auto to 1G full duplex via the SSH CLI of the SFP module.
Then I disabled auto negotiation in the router and selected 1G baseX.

After that, it worked stably.

Open SSH session to the SFP module (10.10.1.1 admin/admin admin/1234)
hal
set speed 1g mode full
