rc9 lockups in Jetway JF4K

Fri Nov 02, 2007 9:54 am

I have a Jetway J7F4k (VIA eden1200 )board with an on-board realtek 8110SC double
gigabit lan
I use an RB14 adapter to install 3 wireless cards (XR2, XR5 and CM9)
I experience lock-ups when I try to pass significant network traffic
IF i leave the cards associated but without traffic through the realtek lan it works for hours
IF I bandwidth test any of the wireless cards from a remote machine through the lan, the board
locks within few minutes and i need to power-cycle it

I can not try 2.9.xx series to see if it works because it does not recognise the 8110 lan
at all.

I read at a linux forum that if you use the Realtek 8169 series linux driver you experience lockups
while you don't with r1000 series driver

Is there a possibility for a 2.9 series release that will be compatible with Realtek 8110SC?
Any hope for updated driver for the lan for the 3.0 series?
Any other help?

I'd be prepared to place a small bet that it's the famous "Via chipset lockup problem" still not fixed, not ROS.

When it locks up, does it leave network interfaces "stuck" (not passing traffic) but the RS232 console working?
That's what the older Via chipsets did, consistently, with high traffic loading - PCI bus "lock-up".
If so, then Via have not moved from stone age (where they were 3-4 years ago).

Just from experience, suspect Via first, not MT. YMMV.

I'll second the Via problem. They are just crap. If you want the same form factor, go with Intel or AMD boards.

There are supposedly special linux 2.6 setup instructions for VIA boards
http://wiki.contribs.org/JetwayMiniITX

Any hope that these are included at the next release candidate of mikrotik?

More thorough investigation revealed that the problem (lockup) comes when
the rtl8110 shares an irq with another caard.
If i leave it alone in an irq it works OK
So there is something about irq sharing .

Definitely IRQ related, possibly as the other guys say - old VIA problem.

In my testing on miniITX boards, I found the Jetway boards not only won't have full hardware support on 2.9, but also don't have the same number of IRQ's as Intel boards.
This has been a major headache for us in the past where wireless interfaces share IRQ's with ether interfaces. High latency, bad throughput etc; and not only the Jetway boards exhibit this degraded performance.

On the Jetways though, it's worse... They're cheap, and dare I say - nasty.

Any news on this issue? We are expiriencing the same problem with ROS 3.9 .. Doing a bandwidth test while the wirelesscards are deactived are working fine but after activating the wireless cards the system locks up.
