User Manager and Hotspot on the same machine

Fri Oct 19, 2007 12:22 pm

Hey guys.
Just a noob question...

Can you run User Manager and Hotspot on the same system / pc / router board?

Cause I'm trying but I can't get thru to the "http://myip/userman" page.
Error 404 - not found

Hotspot is enabled and running smoothly.
User-Manager is under my package list and it is enabled, the first customer
has been created in console...and now I should be able to connect shouldn't I?
I've also enable Radius "Incoming" and created a radius setting pointing to itself.
I'm using winbox v2.2.11 and rOS v2.9.43 btw.

What else is there to do, or is it just not possible to run the two together...?

Thanks a lot.

OK great, so it's not that a stupid idea from me then.

So, technically speaking, once User Manager package has been installed and enabled
under packages, you should be able to brows to http://yourIP/userman. No matter
if you've created a first customer or not. You just won't be able to log in an edit
edit settings if you don't.

But why can't I brows to my url?? Is it because Hotspot is already running?
Do I first need to setup the radius settings in hotspot to make this possible??

Or should I just re install the whole thing and hope for the best...?

Any ideas?

If you can get to the router's main page, you should be able to get to the user manager's page.
(remember to verify that web traffic is enabled to the network you want to use to manage the device ( under services )

I don't think I would try to connect to the user manager system via a hotspot connection (on the same system).

I would connect to it via a connection that was not on the "hot spot controlled leg"..

IE:

Public IP = 12.98.12.230
Private / hotspot IP : 10.0.0.1

I would connect via some network that I could see the 12.98.12.230 address from and use the url: http://12.98.12.230/userman to connect and manage the system from..

Remember:
You must enable RADIUS for your hotspot
You must create a "customer" to enable to login to user manager's web. (user / password must match)
You must enable the client router within usermanager's web (in this case you could use the address 12.0.0.1)

I dont mean to seem insulting here.. I just want to let any one new with usermanager get the most out of the thread.

Have a GREAT one !!!

OK, so this is the end of the road for this thread and here is what I've learned:

You can run Hotspot and User Manager on the same systems....but....
You can NOT access the user manager url (http://..../userman) NOR can your users
access their own management pages (http://..../user) from inside the hotspot.

It's not a question of "rather access your pages from the 'external IP' / interface".
It is just not possible to access these pages while you are on the hotspot interface.

Now this does not make sense to me at all...or is it just me?
Question:
Why create a user login portal for users to log into User Manager to check their connection
and usage information but then only make it possible for them to log into their accounts
from outside the hotspot (i.e. outside your network - the one they use to connect to the
internet....so they have to connect via another service / provider)??

I'm confused.

Hi dvs
I agree with you
I want to believe this is a bug and hope that it would have been correct in version 3.0.
My personal observation is that, if hotspot server is disabled, the http://Router_Ip/userman page will be available so also the http://Router_Ip/user page, but once it is enabled, it is no longer available.

WoW!
Could it be the walled garden?

Also confused :?

hello,
for you to use user manager and hoptspot on the same box, u have to create the first user, since you want to log into user manager interface, you have to log in with the 1st user you created in hotspot.

Assuming you want to login to user manager interface, http://192.168.20.1/userman

The hotspot login page will open so that you log in with the details created before.

After you login then, you have to login with the subscriber name you created in user manager.

I belive this is part of security of hotspot, cus before you get connected you have to be authenticated by the hotspot before any connectivity is achieved.
