SFP port on RB3011, where do you use it for?

Tue Feb 21, 2017 3:29 pm

Do you guys actually use the SFP port on the RB3011? What for. for connection to the internet?
Can it be configured to connect to the switch or directly to the CPU?

Do you use the SRJ01 module so it is an extra ethenet port.
Will using the SFP port affect the speed of the 2nd switch chip and the ports connected to it?
Please share your thoughts.

I use it for my gateway.... and use the first 5 ports for my main network. Yes... using it will drop the speed to the 2nd set of ports.

There are a number of uses

1) Switch or router connection
2) GPON uplink
3) As a quick and dirty fiber tester to see if a link is up and what the signal level is
4) For a fiber connection when the distance to a device is greater than the reach of copper ethernet.
5) To connect to fiber radios - Many WISPs use fiber up the tower now to minimize lightning strikes on equipment

And i'm sure the list goes on and on :-)

Because I also have a CRS226-24G-2S+, I only need a couple of LAN ports on my 3011. So I have an electrical SFP installed to connect to the WAN.

I want my WAN to have a direct connection to the CPU and not be bogged down by a shared Ethernet controller. I don't use ports 6-10.

As stated in my previous post, I also have mine configured this way. But I was thinking, if someone didn't need a fiber connection for the WAN, would it be better to use 1-5 for WAN and 6-10 for LAN?

I would like to set up a failover WAN using a Ethernet LTE modem I have and was trying to figure out the best way to do it?
