RB 1100 Full BGP throughput.

Sun Feb 13, 2011 2:52 pm

Hello,

is anyone using MK RB 1100 or 1000 rog full bgp routing? I am interested in maximum throughput. Will be possible route around 600-700 Mb/s?

Second question:

Is anyone using mikrotik OS on PC for full bgp routing?

Thanx,

Based on customer feedback, I think the RB1100 should be good for about 200Mbps. I would recommend something with 3GHz or faster dual core Pentium for your requirements.

Thanx for your answer.

Is this kind of solutionstable? 3 GHz Quad core xenon CPU for around 800 - 900 Mbit/s FULL BGP routing with 2 upstream providers?

How much memory is required for this kind of solution?

I use an rb1000 with 1GBram and two full bgp table; they use 640MB of ram.
It route 100Mbit (connection tracking activated) and 20% of cpu.

Is it stable please?
My biggest problem right now are rules in our peering cente. We MUST use only CISCO. I dont understand why. But if i compare the price of MK based HP server and cisco 7201 it is horrible.

Thanx anyone

currently i don't use RB's for BGP, but i've just tested the RB1100AH units.
1GHz CPU speed ~980mbps routing (conntrack off)
1GHz CPU speed ~700mbps routing (conntrack on) 710/11mbps, 62k/22k pps
1.5GHz CPU speed ~1.2Gbps mbps routing (conntrack off) 970/300mbps, 93k/43k pps

Tested with jperf, windows default (maybe 1500byte frames) 100 and 200 paralell connections
Cpu is ~90-95%

I know it not answers Your question, but offer a useful info.

I've tested the RB1100 with a two full feeds for some time. But the CPU load was about 80-100% percent in my case. I switched to a x86-box, which works fine. (Celeron @3Ghz IIRC). So I'd advise you to get a x86 box.

FYI... with ver 5.x if you have winbox open to the router, while doing BGP updates, the cpu utiliation shoots up high, and accepting routes takes a lot longer...
(BUG with WINBOX ?)

Close Winbox, use SSH or even the Webfig interface..

We see this behavior on x86 boxes as well.
