MPLS and EOIP tunning, which will be the best for the ERP

Sat Dec 10, 2011 5:13 pm

Dear Buddy...

we experienced when customer running on the EOIP, most of the application having no issue like remote desktop, file transfer and VOIP.

but some how, the ERP will show respond slow, will it be cause by the EOIP tunnel?
if change it to run MPLS, will it better for the ERP system?

beside this, can the the RB1100AH able to handle the MPLS?

thanks.

Since EOIP reduces your MTU on the link you will probably have a lot of fragmentation. MPLS could solve this better, but if you have control over the link in between you could increase the MTU to support full ethernet frame for EOIP as well. Yes, the your routerboard model will support MPLS without a hassle.

Would you mind to shared how to increased the MTU size for the EOIP?

appreciated it..

thanks.

I would really recommend mpls rather than eoip.

Check http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Ma ... uterBoards to check if your unit can handle the increased MTU

Refering to this page http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Interface/EoIP eoip adds 42 bytes.
EoIP tunnel adds at least 42 byte overhead (8byte GRE + 14 byte Ethernet + 20 byte IP)
.

So if you increase you MTU on the eoip interface,
/interface eoip
add arp=enabled disabled=no l2mtu=65535 local-address=0.0.0.0 mac-address=FE:16:6A:47:42:D2 \
    mtu=1542 name=eoip-tunnel1 remote-address=10.11.12.13 tunnel-id=100
And accordingly on you ethernet or wireless interface you should be able to transmitt a full 1500 frame across your eoip link without fragmentation.
/interface ethernet
set 2 arp=enabled auto-negotiation=yes disabled=no full-duplex=yes mac-address=\
    02:18:19:0D:8C:C9 mtu=1542 name=ether3 speed=100Mbps
Check http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Ma ... uterBoards to check if your unit can handle the increased MTU

As a last remark; a mpls + vpls link would need no more than 1526 with ordernary ethernet through the vpls and 1530 (with vlan tagged ethernet within the vpls)

Remember that everything in between on this EOIP link also need to have increased MTU size since you are setting this on the hole EOIP link.

Hi, i convert the wireless link to the MPLS with increase all the contacted interface (bridge, ether1, wlan1, vpls, mpls) to be MTU size 1526 (RB411 & RB411AH).

but, the ERP go through this link still very slow, but if i by pass and it run over the microwave everything is ok.

what's can be the cause?

thanks.

Hello,

If ERP system runs over TCP, i guess it is. :) Try to adjust MSS, with mangle rule in RouterOS. This is more reliable and flexible solution, instead of MTU manipulation. Change it on the router that sits between the ERP and its clients.

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:IP ... Change_MSS

MSS must be less then or equal to: Interface MTU - EOIP header bytes - 40 bytes (TCP and IP header).

Also try to decrease this value with 10 byte steps.

Try to discover MSS with this tool:
