OSPF area range

Fri Oct 11, 2013 12:52 pm

Hi!
Could anyone tell me what /routing ospf area range is good for? I'm trying to setup a simple (for now) network, where I can simulate route summarization on ABR..It is a simple setup: R1 <-> R2 <-> R3, R1 and R2 are in backbone, R2 and R3 are in area1. I've turned on redistribution of connected and static routes on R3, on which i added some dummy networks, namely 192.168.201.0/30 and 192.168.201.4/30, and I'd like to summarize them into 192.168.201.0/24. I added a 192.168.201.0/24 blackhole route on R3. Setting /routing ospf area range on eighter of the 3 routers had no effect, R1 had all those routes in it's routing table. The only thing that worked is setting up /routing filter on R3 and disabling ospf-out chain for 192.168.201.0/30 and 192.168.201.4/30. Is /routing ospf area range even needed for summarization? As far as I've tested, only /routing filter did the trick alone.
