XEN will be removed since v4.4

Wed Dec 02, 2009 10:31 am

Due to ongoing issues with compatibility in XEN, this package will no longer be included in RouterOS starting v4.4 (next release).

We have made a new virtualization system called KVM. This system should be compatible with your existing XEN images, and the settings in KVM are the same as you had them in XEN, with the difference that KVM has more settings and is more advanced.

Important! KVM only works on CPUs that support hardware virtualization. See the KVM manual for a complete list of supported CPUs: http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Kvm

MikroTik will fully assist anyone that needs configuration assistance to migrate from XEN to KVM.

Yes :-) Thank you for removing Xen, it's long over-due. KVM is much better anyway.

That means you will support KVM for non Routerboard devices and Metarouter for Routerboards.

If that is could you please go ahead and advise about the current Metarouter issues ;
  • Non working package repository for original Mikrotik Metarouter image (package source url does not exist any more)
    Not compiling current Openwrt release with current Mikrotik Metarouter patch (1.1)

KVM is already only for X86. KVM only works on special CPUs that have Virtualiation. Read the article.

X86 = KVM
RouterBOARD = Metarouter

the OpenWRT developers removed support for the linux kernel that we use. Your only option is not to use the latest OpenWRT and wait until RouterOS gets a newer kernel.

When RouterOS gets newer kernel? - I have problem with build Metarouter images and packages with latest trunk OpenWRT.

Thanks for quick answer.
What latest build OpenWRT I can use for build Metarouter?

I'm not sure, but I think this information (kernel change) was in their changelog. Maybe some OWRT user can comment.

We're able to compile image and packages with the revision 17511 of Openwrt trunk.
