Confused by MetaRouter Applicability

Sun Jul 04, 2010 1:36 am

Hi All. I really hope that you can help me.

What earthly use is a MetaRouter ? I just cannot work out what it is *for*.

e.g. If i need asterisk, no way am i going to devote what is left over of a Mikrotik device to it - i would be better devoting the whole resources of the board to Asterisk, or better still, the entire resources of a more powerful device, like a PC. (asterisk especially).

I saw one guy trying to do some kind of traffic shaping in OpenWRT in a metarouter !

How odd is that ? Why not use either ROS, which is OpenWRT based anyway, OR use OpenWRT ?
ROS/OpenWRT are both Linux, so surely it makes snse to let ROS handle the underlying Linux Kernel interface rather than running a Manager as well ?

Please help to provide an example use for it, as my brain is melting.

I think metarouter would be a great idea if it was as easy to admin as OpenWRT (package management). For me it would eliminate a need for a second box siting idly running DNS server for small office networks.

you may create a whole test lab inside one router )))

and you can give your customer his own router, so he can access/modify all firewall rules without affecting your main config

... and use up the Limited power of the router.

I prefer Test Labs with less variables, in this case Virtualisation code.

For the price, i might as well buy them (and charge double) the cost of a 433 board.

Up to them if they spend the cash to go on MUMs and learn ROS, which kinda narrows the market.

Personally i chose to Virtualise the Control mechanism, which seems to be working well.

The Resellers understand the VX software a lot better than ROS, mainly because they have no difficult decisions to deal with, which they seem to like. They just sign people up and get money.

Wether it's ROS, DD-WRT etc that they connect Punters to doesn't seem to bother them. They just want it to work, and it does.

maybe your customers are willing to do this, but not all countries are the same. often you have to compete with all you got.

Depends entirely on What You Got i suppose.

MT competes rather well i feel.

MT has almost all you could want from an intelligent Linux router, PLUS a groovy Winbox interface to make it easy.

The rest is just another Linux box and some programming, and i find my overall System about as perfect as it could be for the price.

Ubiquiti are better on CPE price & styling, but i almost always use a Mikrotik as the AP brain.

I meant 'You' as the ISP, not MT :)
