MetaROUTER on RB1100AHx2

Fri Sep 07, 2012 6:26 pm

From http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Metarouter regarding RouterBOARD RB1100AHx2:
MetaROUTER feature is not currently supported on this router.
Is there any ETA for this?

Also, will metarouter be supported on the CCR board?

1. No ETA.

2. no information regarding virtual routers on CCR

Is there any update on running Metarouters one either RB1100AHx2 and CCR 10xx ?

no, there are no news regarding MetaROUTER on either.

Great news... I was just told that metarouters are supported on the X2.

I couldn't get it to work... but I believe what I am told. :)

And.. this was very important to me since they are discontinuing the RB1100AH which runs metarouters just fine. I've got 60+ deployed.

They wouldn't get rid of a router model without having another router that has the same capability, right?

Can I run meta routers on the other x2 models? On Mar 14, 2013, at 7:31 AM, "...

Hello,

yes, you can. there are no restrictions for meta routers on these models, hardware
specification is the only difference.

unfortunately it is not completely true. And you still cannot run MetaROUTER on RB1100AHx2. Just do not hold your breath waiting for the feature. :(

So.. you are saying that Krisjanis lied to me... told me a non-truth.. ??

If that is the case... Why would you discontinue the 1100AH and not have something to replace it with that can do metarouters like it can?

please, correct me, if i'm wrong, metarouter was only avialable on all single-core routerboards? and no metarouter support on any other hardware + on any hardware where more than one core is working?

if it's true, then we can see absolute non-compliance with "backward compatibility" principle. bad thing.

it is on all mipsbe RouterBOARDs and select PPC RouterBOARDs. On x86 is KVM and mipsle has no virtualization support from us.

Is it even planned to get the MetaRouter working on RB1100AHx2 at some point? Please, give us the honest answer - is it technically so cumbersome that it might not get implemented at all?

It was a huge disappointment when I received the AHx2 and discovered that it does not support MR-s as I've been deploying other RB-s with MR-s and I didn't think it would be a problem with the high-end model. My client can wait and keep the old machines running in parallel for some time but if this is going to be a long term problem then I'd rather start thinking of replacing the AHx2 with something else right away.

I'd love to know the answer to this, too. I suspect the problem has to do with trying to figure out a good way of implementing MetaROUTER on a multicore CPU. If that's the case, then MikroTik should release a version that only uses 1 of the cores for guests, to start with, and let the guests think they are running on a single core CPU. If possible, perhaps also let users choose which core to run a MetaROUTER guest on, and balance the load that way (run guest #1 on core 1, and guest #2 on core 2, etc.). Even if it is not the best solution, at least it would be *something* instead of nothing; right now there are no rackmount PPC RouterBOARDS in production that can run MetaROUTER! (Single-core RB1100 is discontinued.)

If that is not possible or not easy, then a second option would be for MikroTik to give RB1100x2 users the option of disabling one of the CPU cores and running a uniprocessor RouterOS kernel instead (similar to "/system hardware set multi-cpu=no" on x86 RouterOS), which would support MetaROUTER. I know that there are some RB1100x2 that we have where I would be willing to sacrifice a CPU core in order to be able to run MetaROUTER on them. Again, it would be a stop-gap measure, but it would at least give people options, and right now they have none.

What NathanA said, sounds reasonable solution to me. Janisk, any comments on that?

for both RouterBOARD multicore - PPC and TILE - architectures MetaROUTER support is planned. However i cannot give any ETA when that could happen. Just now queried developers about this issue - it will be either fully functional implementation, no workarounds.

That sounds nice, but as you said, there is no ETA. It could be 6 months to a year or more before that support is finished. But implementing a way to run uniprocessor kernel on dual-processor PowerPC (something similar to x86 "/system hardware set multi-cpu=no") should not take nearly that long, and would give us users some relief while your developers finish the "no compromises" support you talk about.

Re: MetaROUTER on RB1100AHx2

I think I've managed to develop a procedure that would allow a dual-core RB1100-based board (RB1100AHx2, RB1100Hx2) to run MetaROUTERs, as long as you are willing to sacrifice a CPU core to do so (this software-based procedure would effectively disable the second core). Unfortunately, I can't test it myself because all of our AHx2s are in production. So I was hoping that I might be able to find somebody that had a spare Hx2 or AHx2 kicking around doing nothing that they would be willing to attempt this procedure on. (Although in theory this modification would be reversable simply by re-Netinstalling and should not cause any permanent hardware damage, just as a "CYA" thing I have to disclaim any responsibility should you manage to break your RouterBOARD in the process.)

Why would you want to do this, you ask? Well, the single-core RB1100AH at the $395 price point was recently retired and replaced with the RB1100Hx2 at the exact same price. Although this sounds like a good thing (an extra core at no extra price!), the unfortunate reality is that none of the multicore PowerPC RouterBOARDs support MetaROUTER at this time (you'll see the menu option, but if you try to create a guest, you'll get an error), and the 1100AH was the last remaining 1000-series-class RouterBOARD in production that supported MetaROUTER before its untimely demise, leaving a notable vacuum in the RouterBOARD line-up. Although MikroTik has committed to eventually supporting MetaROUTER on multicore RouterBOARDs, we all know that this may take some time to materialize, and in the meantime those of us who actually make use of MetaROUTER only have the much weaker 400, 700, and 900 series to turn to (that, or build an x86 box and run KVM). It would be nice to be able to buy Hx2s and use them the same way we used to use AHs (which both were/are the same MSRP anyway).

If you're game, drop me a line, and I'll hook you up. If it works the way I hope it will, I'll post the instructions here publicly, but if MikroTik decides they don't want people doing this, they can remove my post.

Sent you a message. I could play with one RB1000AHx2 over the weekend unless there is a risk of completely bricking it.
