windows Btest poor performance

Tue Oct 09, 2007 12:03 am

Hi

When I try Btest for windows, I get very very poor performance 4-5 Mbps.

Windows machine is PIV an mikrotik mashine is also PIV.

I tryed receive and send, to mikrotik machine but test shows 5 Mbps, when I test with two MTs PIV, i get 90Mbps.

Where is the problem, is this program OK or my comp is broken :).

I tested it on a fresh win installation.

Thanks

don't test TO router, but THROUGH router. Also performance will depend on configuration of the router.

Do you have any queues setup on the router titus?

No, I dont.

But never mind, sometimes it works ok sometimes it shows 120kbps on 100 mbps lan, cables and cards are OK.

Thanks anyway

I have been testing and tuning btest for several days trying to figure out a network bug.

It started with a client very poor 10mb up speed on speedtest.net. I had been getting over 100 up, so I told him to try another server. Every server only 10-12 up. I tried my self,, same result. I pulled up a btest and started testing from the furthest router ... in to my local route and every test was full speed down, 10mb up udp, 30 mb up tcp. These are all RB1200's power routers, or RB1100s. Tests between the routers got several hundred Mb. I thought this may be a duplex, mtu issue etc so I tried in btest dropping the packet size from 1500 to 1400, 1200, then at 1052, suddenly full speed to every router.

I was able to duplicate the results with a brand new tough book.

I went through some ping -l 1400-1500 -f (to my local router) and found no gaps with mismatched packet sizes but did find that fragmentation was at 1444, while netsh int ip show int showed my windows mtu at 1500. Meanwhile the local RB1200 router has MTU of 1500 and L2MTU of 1600.

It may be noted that I am connecting to the MTU through a vlan on cisco catlyst 3560.

More to note, I plugged in one of the test pc's directly into the same rb1200 and to the same result to eliminate the switch or vlans as a variable.

ok now I get the same results from two win 7 pc's on the same lan. Since both are sending the up and down are udp 15 mb.

Ok, updated firmware to 3.10 on the 1200 and btest is good to 1500

More information.
I have a local speedtest.net mini running in our server room.
My office --- cisco 3560 switch -- Port 6 rb1200 Port 5-- AirFiber Link -- Port 10 RB1100ah -- Cisco 4500 -- Speed Test server

Before Firmware update
Btest to local rb1200 and remote 1100 degraded on send only with packets 1052 to 1500 Speedtest server 97mb down 2mb up
After Firmware update
Btest degraded to 1100
Speedtest server 97mb down 2mb up
Then I started increasing MTU on link with AirFiber, First I moved the connection to port 9 so that I could use 9000 mtu and 9116 l2mtu, I changed the rb1100 port 10 to match

I started to see performance gains, the btest to the 1100 got up to 70mb both ways and my speed test was around 64 mb. But I noticed this soaked the CPU on the 1200 so I read some more about best ports to use on the 1200, I switched back to port 5 changed the MTU to 3000 and maxed out the layer 2 mtu to 4060, I changed the rb1100 port 10 to match. Now I was getting consistent over 90mb on both btest and speed test. I then tested to a public speed test server and got excellent results.
