NOT TO DO. Weird instalations?

Hi all,

Someone started a thread with Hotspot login screens.. I start now another with weird instalations.

anyone can help us to fix this installation?! xDDDDDDDDDD

You can go to the WC and work with no much problems..

I think all is working. Look at the server in the rack chair.

Please, sticky this post. It could be a tutorial of how not to do our work. Routerboards can work in this conditions? On the top of the WC we can put a nice Hotspot server.

This costumer told us that other company installed the node and it work for only 4 days. Then the company disapears of the map.

I think it was because the battery works for only this 4 days. Look, no solar pannels.. xDD

And look the pretty hole in the case and the sky seams to claim for rain.

Hi,

the first one is not made by me, but all the others are mine! All are real. Let's go guys... it's possible that this things only are possible in Spain? I don't believe it!

Here are some of mine, (some) The encolosure will hold out water, It was cracked due to shipping, The second pic is a temporary 900mhz setup to get to our farm so we could have high speed access, its an RB 433 with Xr9 and Sr2 in the rootenna, and a coax cable coming out of a hole drilled in the back to power the 900mhz, works well. but its temporary,. -Jordan

Here is one I did a few years back, it was only up there for 4 days so we just put a full x86 PC inside a big plastic box. It rained and everything and didnt even get wet!

Probably my worst work ever :(

Pics posted by me are installations by others : P

Here in Spain there are a lot of people that have no idea of how to install the equipement.. and costumers told us to repair the problems. My pics are from 3 municipalities installed by the same "company".

As we usually work at 500 or more Kms away from home we have to install all the equipement very well, to avoid return there!

Hilarious. I bet some of these remote places in Europe and elsewhere you have to use whatever room or materials you can to keep things going. Where we are located there are hardware stores or computer shops within a 15 min drive everywhere. So I guess people use what they can. I can't blame them. But someone using a car battery without solar to recharge? That is hilarious, unless someone stole them?

No solar pannel stolen.. I hear about this company too many times.. with some similar things..

It's like this example.. when one of their customer needs a battery.. they pick up the battery of another costumer.. It's like 10 costumers and 9 batterys... xDD

I think you can get 12 volt solar chargers for like $50 or less that you can clamp onto a car battery. Wow. they actually will come and replace the batteries? I wonder how long they get? I mean the radios don't drop more than 500ma, I can't see the car battery going for longer than a day or two.

I did see on one of the pictures grounds connected through a marret.
This is not good practice.
Grounds should be as fluid and direct to Ground as possible, with no sharp angles.

And the one with the toilet bowl, how convenient !!

This is one ISP at one residetntial location in Varna, Bulgaria. They told us this sh!t is because they are now investing everything in the new optic network and these will be replaced soon, but how soon? Not soon enough for sure.:

Ontop of the next building the switch is exposed to rain etc:
Image

They did not secure the cable that goes from otuside the building, over a nasty edge, into the client's balcony, so he had to do it himself, after his service was down due to wind action on that cable versus the edge, several times:
Image

The cable geos to this busted box.
Image Image Image

You can see a switch with a plastic case, the main link goes into that one, from that main link two wires are PoE that is transferred to proper DC via the two small PCBs... The nasty thing here is 1. crimping/plugs 2. The box is not locked, so links were down due to thief actions several times.. What lowlife dumbass will risk his life - possibly tripping over a wire on the roof in the middle of the night to steal a couple of fifth-hand smelly old 100Mbit switches all taped with ducktape? More than once LOL :D

The client had ping losses due to cheap RJ45 plugs. When weather gets cold, the metal pieces that make contact get smaller and contact is lost, amonsgst other similar problems. + Vibrations from wind etc. ... it's bad folks.

Conclusion: Don't install equpment and cables on the outside of buildings.

I'm publishing these pictures as a warning to others to remind you all that attention to detail is important.

When our technician (who no longer works for us) fitted the bottom antenna, he dropped one spring washer. He was too lazy to climb down the ladder to pick it up, so he just tightened the nuts.

The Cape Town winds came and started shaking the antennas. The one spot where there was no spring washer had no way to absorb the stresses and the result was metal fatigue.

Not sure if Steve's got the same problem in the USA, but here in Southern Africa we have a specific type of ant that seems drawn to electronics.

Strange, I know, but true.

A couple of times now we've had client computers that die for no reason. When we open them up we find that a colony of ants has moved in.

Hi,

is impressive but the RB532 NIC is working fine.. ¬¬u

This was an old installation and this was the connector connected to the RJ45 female in the box. I don't know why but this board is working without problems (with new wires/connectors).

It seams like the plastic RJ45 female stoped the volts.. xD Kamikaze RJ45 female.

The poe and 24V dead too.

Perhaps normis will talk us about the nice 532 surge protector..

RB532 is a very hardy board.

Last week I saw a tech accidently plug a 48V PSU in while the jumper was set to 12V. He pulled it as soon as we realised his mistake, put the 12V PSU in and the board started.

Hi,

Are you sure? The connector on the picture is melted, ruined for good, burnt, destroyed, its smokeeennn - heat, energy, smoke - this MUST have affected the port it was plugged in!!!! Maybe if you look at the port you will see traces of smoke etc - so you should check the resistance of that port : (point A) cable->plug->port->pcb(point B) check resistance from point A to point B :)

This Board is a repeater, I don't need comunication over the RJ45. The PoE works fine.. : P!

But.. the connector is working "fine" because I connected my laptop and winbox works fine too.

The board port is OK but the RJ45 female was broken. We changed the ethernet wire too.

Did you take that picture? Was it intentionally installed that way, or did a pole just fall down? Have any more details?

Authorities not removing the cables allowed for enormous speeds for almost free. So. At least Bulgaria is doing fine, everyone is connected. But even here - there are not such oveburdened lamp posts. We don't want any citizen to get hurt by falling stuff, now, do we.

I worked at a ISP not too long ago. One of the shots they setup for a customer (older employee who left before I ever got there) made a funny install.

We got a call from someone because their internet was no longer working. After sending someone onsite we found out that a old truck moved and after that they no longer had internet. We found out after a bit of inspection that the shot was bounced off the truck and into our tower. When the truck moved (years later) they lost connection.

The famous bounce shot...

Whats happens when a custoner needs to make a "joint"?

Posted: Fri Jul 23, 2010 11:58 am

Suddenly Internet doesn't work and the fun thing is that "nobody has touch anything".

The Mikrotik CPE was running and was wirelessly connected. The "joint" worked fine as PoE with no ethernet communication. It is the miracle of 802.3af when You make a short in the same color wires.

PS: It was all into a plastic bag, all waterproof.

Also, how come you know where they all are around the world ? Are you MI5 ?

Lastly, i left my new shoes in the shoebox, so if you could lift up the battery and get the shoes, and send them to me, i'd appreciate it.

This guy seems to have a fear of cable ties / general neatness. He also leaves his packing material and other junk on the ground and doesn't appear to know the first thing about the laws of RF.

Then, just to add insult to injury, they run UTP / PoE up the tower causing interference with VHF, UHF and ISM frequencies.

WiFi generally is done badly by people who need it to work to make money.

There are very very few who can afford to 'do it properly'.

There is a much bigger number of people who can buy some stuff and slap it on a tower.

Even when the physical links are 100% wonderful, there is an even smaller number of people/organisations who can do the QoS so customers get what they expect (never mind what they want).

It's like the Wild Wild West IMHO, and there *is* Gold in Them Thar Hills.

Yeeehaw !

If you desperately need to power switch in a fast-developing 'crapnet', you can do it by ignoring health and life hazards as well.
I know an operator, that could fill this thread easily just with pictures from 3 houses...
Sadly, the price for internet is a reasonable factor to cheap-ass customers.
More coming...

Well, you can easily bite off psu cable with teeth and connect it without instruments, ensuring that only 12v or so go through your cat5, but no - some people just have to go funny ways. I know, that the other end goes to clients apartment. And what if the client gets curious?...

Wow, the photo on the first post is really radical. I wonder what is up with the one who installed this on that cubicle. If the power source was coming from that side of the room, then maybe he did not put the toilet on that side. Or better yet, he should have installed racks to place the hardware on. They are just to damn expensive to just dip on toilet water in case they accidentally fall down. Good thinking.

Some of my competition never cease to amaze me - for their stupidity.

This guy bought an expensive enclosure. He then bought an expensive plate to mount the board on. He then went to the trouble of marking out the holes to mount the risers in exactly the right places, but he wasn't bothered to secure the UFL connector with some insulation tape. Even better than that, it seems he lost 3 of the 4 machine screws needed to mount the board. Result: He used a plastic bag to insulate the board

No wonder he has one client less...

lol, we only had this up for a couple hours while we did some testing. Our zip ties were to big so we started pulling random things out of the car to make the zip tie fit. But you didn't notice the 433 indoor case duct taped to the bottom of the sector. By the time we had it up it was so damn funny I had to post it.

Why can't they bury some tubes for optic cables etc? Digging technology, construction and organizational procedures exist and should be cheaper now.

It's never a good idea to judge others by the way we see things.

You will only understand why they have such a love for overhead cable once you've been to South Asia.

I don't exactly judge others. I am just asking a question which any engineer can ask because it concerns building of networks. What solution applies around the world can be easily applied where you live as well. This is why I kindly request some insight. I don't mean to disrespect.

When nobody controls who puts wires where, when anyone can take your wires, when there is no free wireless spectrum, when it's not possible to put wires in the ground - then you get something like this. You must see the traffic in the streets to get the atmosphere :)

Some people are ignorant and don't have design and planning about the equipments. Preliminary they don't want to spend much money but after a certain period they start suffering which costs more $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

They need to shift these equipments to a good location and have proper design to avoid future occurrence.

Best Regards,

Here's one I replaced not long ago... This yellow wire is the internet connection feeding an apartment complex - it went into the building, into a router, and the yellow wire is the primary connection going to a series of routers (not access points - routers) mounted throughout the ceiling. I didn't open a cover or unscrew the terminals - that's exactly as I found them, fully exposed.
Photo Oct 10, 12 25 28 PM.jpg
I'm not sure why they didn't go around the electric box - instead they just broke out of the conduit and went directly behind the panel
Photo Oct 10, 12 24 53 PM.jpg
Then came out the top and went back into conduit and up into the attic.
Photo Oct 10, 12 24 45 PM.jpg

In the attic were a series of these shelves holding up routers - with electricity piped to each one. Many had a kludge of external high-gain omni and directional antennas.
Photo Oct 10, 11 52 50 AM.jpg
Photo Oct 10, 11 54 20 AM.jpg
Unfortunately, because they were routers, some were routing and/or handing out conflicting DHCP addresses on the same network. A scan of AP's showed about 18 depending on where you stood - noise was through the roof, and reliability was in the toilet. When they locked up (once or twice a day) the apartment manager couldn't get to the AP's in the attic, so he had a process of resetting breakers he'd follow that would reset the whole system.

This is just one of the closets where there were AP's, a computer that I never even turned on - just ewasted; and an omni.

Customer had a power outage. Had never seen their network cabinets before. Went up stairs and had a look. This is what I found. No documentation or labels (the labels you see mean nothing). Took two hours to fix a fault (bad cable causing Cisco switch to shut a port down).

Again

the core issue is that equipment is very cheap nowadays ... Installation of equipment is extreme expensive - so where is the client who pays the money for installation costs?

do not forget! to ever troubleshoot an issue - would pay the money easy for proper installation - though - that's another budget so we are fine.. you think.. and client pays anyway...

sorry, but sad to see so many bad examples.

My company bought a tower from another company. As the RF engineer I was charged with taking inventory of the site and equipment. There was a wireless ISP already on the site when I got there. I took the following pictures of what I found.

Image
photo hosting sites

how to screen capture
Image
picture hosting
Image
image hosting over 10mb

It is our company policy to keep everything neat and tidy. The ISP had already been given notice that they would have a clean up their mess and they had failed to do so. So I called my boss and asked him what he wanted me to do. He told me to remove the equipment from the building and that he would call the ISP and let them know that they were being evicted from the tower.
By the time they arrived at the site their equipment was sitting outside in a pile. Words were exchanged and I had to call the sheriff to the site to have the persons from the ISP escorted off the property. The building is no longer there. Neither is the ISP.
