damn. this is murder. they fixed a screw driver a brush to fix up SXT. NEXT time they might fix up someone's neck.

i am sure the source of electricity must be from the live wire running to the electrical pole.

lol, we only had this up for a couple hours while we did some testing. Our zip ties were to big so we started pulling random things out of the car to make the zip tie fit. But you didn't notice the 433 indoor case duct taped to the bottom of the sector. By the time we had it up it was so damn funny I had to post it.

Why can't they bury some tubes for optic cables etc? Digging technology, construction and organizational procedures exist and should be cheaper now.

It's never a good idea to judge others by the way we see things.

You will only understand why they have such a love for overhead cable once you've been to South Asia.

I don't exactly judge others. I am just asking a question which any engineer can ask because it concerns building of networks. What solution applies around the world can be easily applied where you live as well. This is why I kindly request some insight. I don't mean to disrespect.

When nobody controls who puts wires where, when anyone can take your wires, when there is no free wireless spectrum, when it's not possible to put wires in the ground - then you get something like this. You must see the traffic in the streets to get the atmosphere :)

Some people are ignorant and don't have design and planning about the equipments. Preliminary they don't want to spend much money but after a certain period they start suffering which costs more $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

They need to shift these equipments to a good location and have proper design to avoid future occurrence.

Best Regards,

Here's one I replaced not long ago... This yellow wire is the internet connection feeding an apartment complex - it went into the building, into a router, and the yellow wire is the primary connection going to a series of routers (not access points - routers) mounted throughout the ceiling. I didn't open a cover or unscrew the terminals - that's exactly as I found them, fully exposed.
Photo Oct 10, 12 25 28 PM.jpg
I'm not sure why they didn't go around the electric box - instead they just broke out of the conduit and went directly behind the panel
Photo Oct 10, 12 24 53 PM.jpg
Then came out the top and went back into conduit and up into the attic.

In the attic were a series of these shelves holding up routers - with electricity piped to each one. Many had a kludge of external high-gain omni and directional antennas.
Photo Oct 10, 11 52 50 AM.jpg
Photo Oct 10, 11 54 20 AM.jpg
Unfortunately, because they were routers, some were routing and/or handing out conflicting DHCP addresses on the same network. A scan of AP's showed about 18 depending on where you stood - noise was through the roof, and reliability was in the toilet. When they locked up (once or twice a day) the apartment manager couldn't get to the AP's in the attic, so he had a process of resetting breakers he'd follow that would reset the whole system.

This is just one of the closets where there were AP's, a computer that I never even turned on - just ewasted; and an omni.

This was a closet I was in today. Troubleshooting a faulty wall jack. Nothing was labeled.

The coconut are cellular masts. Not real trees. I have seen various fake trees like this in South Africa and Namibia.

Customer had a power outage. Had never seen their network cabinets before. Went up stairs and had a look. This is what I found. No documentation or labels (the labels you see mean nothing). Took two hours to fix a fault (bad cable causing Cisco switch to shut a port down).

Again

the core issue is that equipment is very cheap nowadays ... Installation of equipment is extreme expensive - so where is the client who pays the money for installation costs?

do not forget! to ever troubleshoot an issue - would pay the money easy for proper installation - though - that's another budget so we are fine.. you think.. and client pays anyway...

sorry, but sad to see so many bad examples.

Re: NOT TO DO. Weird instalations?

My company bought a tower from another company. As the RF engineer I was charged with taking inventory of the site and equipment. There was a wireless ISP already on the site when I got there. I took the following pictures of what I found.

photo hosting sites

how to screen capture

It is our company policy to keep everything neat and tidy. The ISP had already been given notice that they would have a clean up their mess and they had failed to do so. So I called my boss and asked him what he wanted me to do. He told me to remove the equipment from the building and that he would call the ISP and let them know that they were being evicted from the tower.
By the time they arrived at the site their equipment was sitting outside in a pile. Words were exchanged and I had to call the sheriff to the site to have the persons from the ISP escorted off the property. The building is no longer there. Neither is the ISP.

no, they are just staging them for your amusement.

I find myself in many of the pictures due to limited budget/possibilities to mount equipment.

I saw the 13A plugs and figured it had to be an ex British colony or protectorate. Suspected it was Zimbabwe when I saw the lattice mast.

It is nice to sell a rack enclosure, just to stuff equipment into it like garbage.
If the NAS does not fit on top of the PC, it will be okay to turn it 90 degrees.
20140324_092855.jpg
Of course, delicate electronics have to be protected from dust, and other harmful effects.

Another good find, an offset antenna with an "all purpose plastic connector box" used instead of a head.
Bandwidth reaches a lightning fast 1 Mbit/sec when the weather is fine.

No, but I don't know for sure who did the installation, so no names. :)
This is a new client of ours, who had very low standards in IT before realizing it hurts the business.
We literally find new kludges every day.

Like this nice, twinned power cable. Having everyting on an UPS is a good thing, right?

Soldering wires from back of the pcb conducts better and reduces number of connectors used. But this is not so bad if someone wants to keep warranty. Worse are the holes without fastening cables.

Problem was, that there wasn't possibility for soldering, otherwise I would do it better way ;)
The holes were covered later :)

about concrete-reinforcing of steel tubes for cabling: truly russian-style of networking, where not only dozersfrequently ruin copper and fiber cables, but dog-sized rodents pose serious threat both for equimpment and humans.

If it is finally on both sides it could work as only 4 wires are used for 100MbitFD Ethernet.

I have done this a couple of times, when there was 1 cable run available and 2 connections needed on 100Mbps.
And it works flawless.

There are even commercial produced adapters for that. 1 RJ45 plug to 2 RJ45 jack. I have a couple of those in my cable box.

Some added fun . The power switch for that Netgear switch sits on the cable.
You can get everything setup perfectly , walk away from a site and then have another cable touch it due to gravity or have it fall down to the base of the enclosure and the whole site goes down.If I recall those switches are unmanageable so you cant even use Zabbix or Zenoss to ping the damn thing to know when/if it goes down.

Not that I know anything about this

Multiomnisector self-interferencing high vswr antenna system with extended capability to gather aerial static electricity to power the isle based standalone remote access point. Very good job!

I was trying to get a better signal, from about 40 feet high on this tree, with a 36 foot ladder...... The hardest part was tieing the zip ties to the elastic band to hold it on the tree. Have to trim the tree a bit to get a better signal. :-)

* Don't worry, only temporary.

Metal RB after one year outdoors, Ventspils. We also have experience with ubnt aluminium boxes and some aluminium antenna head units. Aluminium erodes so easily in those seashore locations.

I was minding my own business (installing my HAM radio antenna stuff) on the top of the 7 floor block where I live, when I noticed something glowing red in the dark, and when I came closer, I found this... The tube is the air exhaust from the toilets of the flats :)
Also note the "neat" indoor UTP cable management on the roof :)

Ibersystems you are a legend for posting this. I am stealing these picks for teach my techs...

I have often gone to a site where they have worked and ripped all the cables out and told them to do it properly. If I am not prepared to pay for the work, I can't expect the client to.

Oh, and some of the pics in this thread are proof as to why aliens won't visit us.

I don't have pictures for this, and it wasn'tma bad installation.

I went to Mozambique to build a VHF repeater at the Cahora Basa damn. We flew around in a helicopter until we found a suitable site that was on top of a peak that was inaccessible except via Helicopter. After choosing a site, we started flying in everything and built the plinth, repeater room, solar array, and mast. When we got back to South Africa we were told to go back to Mozambique as everything was offline. Got back to the peak and found everything was stolen except the bricks and mortar. Even the door frame was gone. What amazes me if those batteries need to people to lift, and even then it was a struggle, but somehow they managed to carry them down the mountain cliffs. Now there is a guard up there 24 hours a day.
