Questions about ECMP load balancing.

Thu Dec 24, 2009 6:02 pm

I just read the topic about ECMP load balancing from this link http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/ECMP_load ... masquerade. and my english is unwell,so can't catch the precise meaning of some sentences.
1. Does "known issues" this phrase mean that issues which is known surely and definitely?
2. Are two issues-"DNS issue" and "Routing table flushing" which mentioned in the end of the article the defects of the ECMP load-balancing? Thanks.

I don't know whether I had expressed my intentions clearly,hehe...

ECMP load balancing is a good method for balancing multiple ISP connections.
And it is really simple to set it up.

But it has its limitations. And "The routing table flushing" is its main "defect".

MT guys introduced PCC to solve all defects.

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/PCC

BTW - ECMP works fine without src-nat, flushing have no effect then.

What is "BTW-ECMP"? is it equivalent to "ECMP"?

chupaka: What is the meaning of "if users are assigned public IPs"? Do you mean don't masquerade but do it like this----
/ ip firewall nat
add chain=srcnat action=src-nat to-addresses="public IPs"

yes, if you are src-natting (masquerading or something) - then your users are affected by ECMP table flushing, long-time connections can be broken periodically

Chupaka: Since ECMP has "flushing" major defect, then what particular merit dose ECMP have compare with "NTH" and "PCC" load-balancing? If no,I think ECMP is of little usefulness.

yesss, as always - do not use bazooka to fight rats =) ECMP is ideal without NAT

ECMP is like Nth, but MUCH simplier to setup. but 'flushes' are pay for simplicity. PCC is here to make things more stable and do not waste connection-marks

I known that PCC is more stable owing to PCC do not interrupt the connection, but what is meaning of "PCC..... do not waste connection marks"?

oops, sorry - let's consider it as a typo =)

I mean, you still can use connection-marks for your needs, and not use address lists
