Apple Mac various https failures through RouterOS

Thu Feb 11, 2010 6:36 pm

I attempt to login to various https sites using Apple Mac computers through my RB532 but I do not get a response back from the login attempt. A PC works fine. Other networks, it works fine. The combo is Apple Mac and RouterOS.
I assigned a public IP to the computer, so there is no NAT occurring on the box. Any ideas?
My current version of OS on the RB is 2.9.8

I think maybe an update is required. I use version 2.9.51 on my RB1xx and RB5xx devices. The later versions (V3.xx and V4.xx) malfunction on RB units with the smaller memory package.

I have good results with the new Macs using OSX. Safari has no problem with the login page.

The macs I have tested have various os running. My personal one is running OSX. Doesn't matter whether I am running Safari of FireFox. Remember that they work fine on a different network. This is only on the RouterOS network.

So you have upgraded to V2.9.51 and the failures still happen?

Well, this is embarrassing!
I just went to the download page and found that V3.3 is the earliest version available. Someone else help me out here!

I got it updated to 2.9.51, still same problem. The initial login screen appears, but when the userid and password are submitted, the webpage just hangs out for a while and I eventually get a connection reset error. This happens on various https sites, but not all.

what login page? the hotspot?

sounds like an MTU problem, are you using a PPPoE connection, or anything other than 1500 mtu ?

The login page is for Utah Valley University's UVLink.

Why yes, I am using PPPoE, it has mtu of 1480.

As a final post, adjusting the MTU of the Apple worked. Thanks for all the help in tracking this issue down.

you shouldnt need to statically adjust anyones MTU. Do you happen to be blocking any ICMP? If things are working properly it should just work without tweaking the OS settings. Either the Change MSS rules on Mikrotik aren't getting used properly (or wrong or not set) or there are some ICMP packets getting dropped that shouldn't be.

Click on Apple ---> System Preferences ---> Network (select the used interface) ---> Ethernet ---> Manually ---> Set MTU.
However I do not see any place, where you can configure it for PPP interface.
Which interface MTU you have changed?
