MT RBoard Web Proxy with USB RAID Storage

Wed May 19, 2010 8:08 am

Hi

Could you guys give me some advise/suggestions on web proxy MT RBoard hardware device with level 5 or 6. I will use it as the core/main web proxy.

Would be great if i can connect external SATA drive with mirroring drive that i can swap if 1 of them fail. Or at least with high GIGA flash stick hard drive. Which is better Standard hard drive or flash drive?

And what is squid is this web proxy? I want to use it for hot spot STAR point of presents with central web proxy.

FYI. Usr Manager for centralize hotspot will be running on the central/parent Web Proxy MT RB Leve 5 or 6 box as well.

How can you tell on tower 1 ( out of ex. 4 ) to store in local proxy MT RB 750g object lest then ex 1MG and larger to store on the core/main/parent Web proxy. Or maybe squid is better?

Need you help/ advice. New to the topic but my MT RB 750g testing transparent Web Proxy works ok.

THANKS GUYS.

With Routerboards, read/write is done by CPU, then, if you need to proxy few users, you can do it with RB1000. I have one in a school working fine but.. few users.
Perhaps you can use a PC with ROS Level5 installed if you need to cache the files.

Thanks,

use the Sata HDD for better read/write. if you are not going to store the files then you can better incraese the memory of your machine. i have web proxy with cache on the HDD and works perfect

There is no any advantages you can get from using RAID on USB storage when using it on RouterOS, regular USB drive will be fine (at least we are using for quite large network).

RB1100 does not have USB port, neither have RB750G.

500 clients is very generic description, more information is required, but I do not see any problems, why there should be any problems for RB1100 with such number of clients.

Sergejs,

we can use a RB with a USB disk to do proxy cache? ¬¬u

It's not the same of using a compact flash? Or RB could read/write faster in the usb?

When there is USB port, you can attach disk and use it for proxy.
/store is used to manage the disk and specify, which disk should be used for proxy (USB).

yes,

BUT.. who read/write to the USB? the RB CPU? If it's like this.. you can't use this system directly for proxy cache more than 15-30 users..

Yes, CPU and that's why you should be ready for load.
