Problems with OSPFv3 in 5.0

Wed Apr 06, 2011 5:32 pm

Hello,

we have problems with OSPFv3 in RouterOS 5.0. It works ok in 4.17 and also i thing 5.0rc5 problem was not here.

If connection is established and state on both side become full, there is no problem later, but we have strange problems with connecting.

This errors are repeating in LOG:

and state is ExStart on both sides. Some sugestions what with it ?

We tested with both broadcast mode and also ptmp mode with same results. Sometimes connect OK, sometimes after hours, sometimes never (reboot needed).

Hardware is RB800 and RB1100.

We have the same problem and i think that is a bug in RouterOS ... i already have this problem since all 5.0rc-Versions.

I just sent mail to MT Support.

Dear guys!
Any news about this issue? I have same problem after upgrading to routerOS ver 5.5 and only in one routerboard, why?
Could be a firmware problem? Now I try to upgrade firmware and I hope....

Thanks in advance

Best regards

Hi!
Upgrade firmware doesn't resolve this issue.

Thanks

I, too, am also having this issue. I've got two x86 boxes setup and there was no problem on ROS 5.6 but when I upgraded both sides to 5.7 the problem appeared. Has anyone found a work around or has MT acknowledged the issue?

Thanks,
Ryan Wilkins

Ryan,
I also have this issue since ROS 5.0. I don't know why!.
If I downgrade all the RB to ROS 4.17 the issues dissapear.

I have to use ROS 5 or later since there are things works better with it rather than 4.17.

Is MT supporting this problem?. The changelog doesn't say anything about it.

Re: Problems with OSPFv3 in 5.0

I'm running v5.7 and I have big problems with OSPF too. I have a few dozens of routerboards and RB1200 as main router. All routing is dynamic. OSPFv2 is perfectly stable and without any problem for a long time as I remember, but OSPFv3 is my nightmare. After bad experiences I spent many hours on experiments and finally I had to stop the implementation and support of IPv6 (I don't want to solve it by static routes). First of all, most routers every few seconds generate error messages:
route ospf error Discarding packet: locally originated
route ospf error        src address=fe80::xxxxxxx
route ospf error Discarding packet: locally originated
route ospf error        src address=fe80::xxxxxxx
route ospf error Discarding packet: locally originated
route ospf error        src address=fe80::xxxxxxx
etc. etc.
where xxxxxx is local link IPv6 address of all enabled active ETH/VLAN/WLAN/SIT ports (which are not set as passive). Routing is operational, but I still have thousands and thousands error messages in the log, which is very very annoying and log is unusable for other important records. As Mapik I tried to change "Network type" to other types, but without success. It is interesting that some routers in my network do not have this problem, although they have a similar configuration. I do not understand it.

But this is not the biggest problem. Sometimes routing goes down. As I have discovered, one reliable reason is situation, when some router in the network changes its own Router ID (it could be for any good reason, e.g. new or change IP on active interface, deliberate change of Router ID etc.). The consequences are fatal. Whole network becomes very unstable, on many routers are error messages like 'Database Description packet has init bit set in middle of an exchange', routing is completely or partially disfunctional on whole network. The same situation with OSPFv2 is without any problems, change of Router ID is safe, not later than thirty seconds is all routing newly re-synchronized and all is perfectly OK. But not with OSPFv3. Probably there are some another reasons for such unstability, but I don't know them exactly. But I have discovered one method, which often helps. I have set 'Redistribute Default Route' on my main router. I set this to 'never', wait a while and then come back to 'Always'. Sometimes is need to repeat it, but it helps almost always - for some time, a day, two or so - until the next collapse.

Shortly, OSPFv3 is not usable, at least for me. Unstability is too big, many problems, reasons are not clear. I hope that boys from Mikrotik are working on it and I hope that the next version (5.8 ) of ROS will be better. The sooner the better. Please!!
