Looking for alternatives to monitor multiple deployed MK's

Fri Nov 11, 2011 10:59 pm

Hello,

I am looking for something that would give me robust features to manage multiple mk's that are deployed plus lan devices (wireless ap's, switches) and not computers. Looked at many different solutions from a previous thread but they all incorporate more or less helpdesk type functionality which I don't need. If anyone has any recommendations that would be great. Whether free or paid doesn't matter.

Can you be more specific? What do you mean by "manage"? Audit and push configurations, monitor equipment?

If so:
free - rancid, mrtg/cacti
paid - SolarWinds Orion with Configuration Manager

Monitor see up down status of routers, ap's, switches and perhaps have e-mail notifications.

The canonical free/oss solutions are Nagios, OpenNMS, and Zenoss. They will all do that.

Mikrotik also makes "The Dude" as a free network monitoring tool.

For pay I quite like SolarWinds. It ain't fast and requires a lot of hardware (depending on the number of nodes you need to manage), but once it runs it's very, very solid and has a multitude of plugins to monitor all kinds of things, including applications.

I don't work for them, so I don't hand out quotes for it - check their web site for their information. The pricing depends on how many nodes and ports you want to monitor.

We're very happy with the Dude.
Does all we need and runs very stable.
A dedicated Monitoring-PC with big screen, UMTS Stick for sending
alarms and a UPS for keeping it running is the appropriate Hardware.
