don't work a static DNS

Fri Jan 04, 2013 6:32 am

I have RB1100AHx2 v5.19.
Users gets IP of DNS-server by DHCP (it is IP address of Mikrotik).
I created static DNS for the server in my LAN.
[uline@MikroTik] > ip dns static print
Flags: D - dynamic, X - disabled, R - regexp
# NAME ADDRESS TTL
0 server 192.168.1.2 1d
1 1s 192.168.1.192 1d

But Hosts cann't resolve this name.
The funny thing is If write the name with dot,
# NAME ADDRESS TTL
0 server. 192.168.1.2 1d
Firstly I execute 'ping server' and cann't resolve name.
Then I execute 'ping server.' and it is OK name is resolved.
After that I execute 'ping server' and it is OK name is resolved. But over some time resole will be broke.

It doesn't work that way. You have to enter "server.com" for the DNS to be resolved, otherwise the computers will be looking for some device within LAN named "server.", they are not sending requests to dns server.

Dear Caci99, Thank You very match for your support.
I check it by the instrumentality of the Wireshark-sniffer.
I saw a NetBIOS Name query when I execute 'ping server' No DNS query.
I saw a DNS query when I execute 'ping server.'

Question close.
