CRS125-24G-1S-2HnD-IN - some info before buying

Sun Apr 27, 2014 8:59 pm

Hello!

I will be setting up a few offices with new network and I'm looking towards CSR125 for a "all-in-one" solution to solve my problems. Before I go into buying the equipment, I have some questions:

- Is it possible to mount custom rack brackets to the side of the switch in have in in a rack? On some pictures I saw holes on the side...
- it is possible to detach antennas? What kind of connector do they use?
- If it's not, are antennas removable? In that case I would just create a custom pigtail to extend antennas.

I would need the following functions:
- router, switch and wlan capability
- 3-4 VLANs (privat lan, public lan, Wifi, VOIP)
- VirtualAPs (privat and public use)
- simple firewall with around 10 rules
- hotspot ( probably max 10-15 users, mostly 0-5)
- user manager(radius)
- 1-2 VPN links (OpenVPN) (connection to main building and maintenance, very low traffic)
- DHCP server
- a few Queues to limit public users

Will the switch be able to do that or is it too weak? My WAN link is 10/5 and I expect it to route at that speed. It would be nice to have some reserve in case I ever upgrade to higher speeds.

How's the stability of the switch? I know it's a relativly new product and I have read reports of it not performing as it should. Have those problems been fixed by now or are they still a problem?

Is this switch ready for production or should I go another way?

The other alternative so far is a RB2011 + RB951G-2HnD. Would that be a better and more stable solution?

Hi. This switch has the same cpu like rb2011 so the routing performance will be the same. All functions you require will handle with ease. Antennas are not detachable. You can install pigtails and then you can mount whatever antennas. I had not have it in my hands personally.

I know everything I need is suppose to work, but I'm curious if someone who has it and tested the thinks I need:)

I just want to be sure before ordering 10 pieces and then realize I would be better of with option number 2.

Don't expect the CRS to NAT more than 200 Mbps.
And I would also take a look at RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN, which includes WiFi and is cheaper (if 5 gigabit and 5 fast ethernet ports are enough for your setup).

I'm looking towards CSR because I need more ports. RB2011 with wifi would be nice, but unfortunately I need more ports.

As far as NAT goes, as I said, currently I need 10/5 and I don't see the need for more than 50/50 ever in my scenario. So 200Mbps is over the roof for my needs:)

I'm using a couple like that. Basically a 2011 with more ports. Just be aware that the full switch features are still evolving (6.12 has a lot of them, but they aren't fully documented with examples).

Hey there!

Nice to hear. I know it doesn't support all the switch functions, but to be honest, I don't really need that much stuff anyway. As far as switch goes, I only need VLAN support and that is suppose to work, right?

Yes. I'm using VLANs in Bridge mode right this second...

Do you experience any problems with port flapping?
Do you perform any monitoring on the switch? Which software?

No to the first question. I only monitor with winbox.
