Problem with Huawei E3372 4G modem

Tue Sep 23, 2014 11:53 am

Hello,
Recently i bought LMT (Latvijas mobilais telefons) 4G modem Huawei E3372 with SIM. With PC it works without any problems but with mikrotik RouterBOARD 951Ui 2HnD and with mikrotik mAP 2n it has problems. With Huawei E392 that SIM is working despite that E392 also isn't in supported hardware list.
So what happens - 1. After inserting E3372 4G modem in mikrotik usb jack, mikrotik creates LTE interface, after setting APN and PIN in LTE settings 4G modem starts up (still blue LED) and it shows that it is connected/active. But there's no internet connections.
2. None of the ports are listed in port list.
3. In LTE interface settings i cant get Info because "Couldn't start - Modem does not have serial interface! (6)"

After 4G modem pulling out and reinserting LTE settings are default (APN and PIN are default).

About 4G modem:
Device name: E3372
My number: Unknown
Hardware version: CL1E3372SM Ver.A
Software version: 22.286.03.00.17

I would appreciate if someone could tell what to do to make E3372 4G modem working.

By using putty, connected to a COM port
Translated in modem mode, the command AT ^ SETPORT = "FF; 10,12"
Mikritik work, but using ppp-client
Speed does not rise 3.5 MB / sec
The Mode 3G works but LTE (4G) does not work

What to do to mikrotik saw LTE interface?

The same bandwidth limit issue on e3372 and MT RB912UAG-2HPnD, v6.20. In hilink mode testspeed.net to LMT (in LMT network) shows 50/30, in ppp-out mode 30/20. e3372 configured as 4G modem - AT^SETPORT="FF;10,12".

How do you switch between PPP-Mode and Hilink? I have the LMT Megafon 150-1 which is a Huawei 3272 and I would like to switch from Hilink/IP-Mode because I can't see RSSI. Or is there any statistics available in /interface lte ?

Switching from Hilink to modem (PPP) mode and back possible by stick firmware change. Dig internet on that, there are tons of info how to do that.

Hello everyone,
based on the facts I discovered here I bought RB951 Ui and Huawei 3372 modem. Both modem and the router work OK together, until I start downloading/uploading using wireless at maximum speed that the mobile provider allows. After a short while normally after downloading some 250 MB, the modem disconnects and won´t re-establish the connection unless I reboot the router. I discovered that this problem manifested repeatedly at a peak of what the mobile network is capable of, usally cca at 23 MB/s(download), so I tried to limit the speed by the means of queue set at 15/15Mbits/s. This seemed to help, however I encountered the problem again after a short while even with the limit set to work. I would like to ask if any of you have the same problem or an idea as to how to solve this? Thank you and forgive my inexperience, but than again, where else but here to ask for help...

I've succesfully connected E3372 LTE modem to my Mikrotik 951Ui-2HnD - The modem must be hi-link version (modem acts as ethernet router). When modem is connected to usb port mikrotik creates LTE interface. You dont have to enter any APN, passwords etc because its all already configued inside LTE modem. Then You have to go to IP > "DHCP Client" menu and click "+" to add new client for LTE interface. Then go to IP > Firewall and in NAT tab you have to make sure that masquerade chain is set to "Out interface: LTE". Thats all.

Hi all! E3372 successfully works as a modem (PPP connection) in Evolved 3G (LTE) mode.

It brings 30 Mbps of internets but suffers up to 30% cpu load. Primarily cpu is loaded by 'ethernet' and 'firewall' subsystems on default-like router configuration due to profiler.

Is this load ok? Could it be better with LTE-interface (HiLink mode)? I don't want to change modem firmware without a big need.

Hello, RB2011UAS-2HnD still seems to have problems with Huawei E3372 4G modems
it doesnt appear in resources/USB after i have connected it and no LTE interfaces appear,
tried all sorts of restarts and shutdown procedures listed in other threads to get it to detect the modem but with no luck
router has the latest 6.30.2 OS
Edit:
Got the modem detected through a hub but still cant get the LTE interface

Works fine on 6.30.2 with lmt labeled huawei on hilink software.
exists e3372s or 3372h versions. both must have the hilink software.
but if the e3372 is in ppp modem modus lte reachs only 30 mpbs. in NCM-Modus it reaches full lte speed as its sector delivers.
it is possibil in next releases to implement this solution.
under lte tab it shows then the lte device in NCM-Modus when connected and acts as a Huawei-eth interface (its to implements the linux drivers http://workupload.com/file/NmOAD4pW)
trought a dhcplient on interface Huawei-eth is get assigned the pubblic ip .

I have an E3372h-153 (T-mobile Hungary) modem ndis-ppp firmware, which did not work at first because of the need of usb modeswitch.
I could fix the problem using the AT^SETPORT command.

The original mode was:
AT^SETPORT="A1,A2;12,1,16,A1,A2"

I set the modem to:
AT^SETPORT="FF;12,1,16"

usb power reset, and it started working as a PPP interface.

------
I found theese settings using AT^SETPORT, and AT^GETPORTNAME:
AT^SETPORT="initial_mode;normal_mode"

map:
1 - Mobile Data Modem (MDM)
5 - GPS interface
6 - control interface
12 - PC UI
10 - modem?
16 - NDIS
A1 - Virtual cd
A2 - TF card reader
FF - Dummy (disable modeswitch when using this as the initial mode?)

Hi

I stumbled against the issue as well . It works however speed is capped to 3.5 MB / sec only , when i plug E3372 to my mac speed is not capped at all.

Anyone sorted this out how to overcome the capping and get LTE to work?

Did you?:
1. switch on DHCP Client for LTE interface
2. made a masquerade rule in nat table for LTE interface

i have a similar problem

finaly got it made to have a connection via USB LTE Modem (PPP Mode .... NOT HiLink)

big problem thou is, i have around only 50% of speed of my provider (Hutchinson 3G Austria 3AT)
normaly my speedtest results are around 40Mbit down / 15Mbit up when Huawei E3372 is connected to my mac
when i connect the E3372 to my routerboard (RB951G-2HnD) and i run a speedtest i only have 12-20Mbit down and around 6Mbit up....

i habe no QoS, Queue Limiting, etc. active

here some Huawei E3372h Info:
at^hcsq?
^HCSQ:"LTE",51,45,166,28

OK

with ppp mode you will not get more than approx 25mbps because the ppp emulation. If you would have lte interface with dhcp-client there is no such limitation.

yeah that's what i thought too :/
bad luck for me so ;)

well i will exchange the E3372h with a 3AT WebGate3 tomorrow and that will run in bridge mode. i tested this shortly with the Webgate3 (ZTE LTE Router) of a friend of mine and bridge mode worked flawlessly (Firmware B09 H3G Austria)

i will share efforts ASAP when i got my own to tangle it up with my MikroTik hardware ;-P hehe

thanks for the feedback so far

so i returned the E3372h to H3G Austria (3AT; drei.at)
unfortunately they haven't got any Webgate3 in stock today so i have to wait for one this week.

i'll let you know how the progress with it in BRIDGE mode is going :-)

so i got my drei.at (H3G AT; 3AT) WebGate3. today (ZTE LTE Router Cat.4)
to my luck there was the newest firmware already on it (B09)
so i activated the SIM card and went online with it!
i activated "Open Internet" via the online drei.at customer center and after 10-15minutes it was ready to work (this feature enables the official WAN IP in the LTE net to be "handed over" to the CPE instead of a private 10.x.x.x IP!!)

i then disconnected the LTE connection on the ZTE webinterface, switched to BRIDGE mode on the LTE router... be sure to set the connection mode to "Automatic" on the ZTE CPE!

i connected a RB951Ui 2HnD to it (ZTE [LAN1] <--> RB951 [ether1])
created a DHCP-client for ether1 and boom i was online.
i now have my routerboard online with a dynamic official WAN IP in the LTE network and via the MikroTik cloud (IP > CLOUD > ENABLE) it's reachable like a charm!

L2TP/IPsec VPN > works
PPTP VPN > works
Portforwarding > works
SSH > works

EDIT:
OpenVPN also works like a hell of a charm! deactivated PPTP & L2TP/IPsec therefor!!

so finally i can say "bye bye" to my old ADSL provider (A1 Telekom Austria) :D

Hey guys,

qustion, what are now the recommended mode for the e3372s Stick to run it along with a mikrotik?
I have at the moment a e3372s in modem mode and i will try to flash it into HiLink mode if it is necessary.
I couldnt get an connection at the moment while the stick is in modem mode? Dont know why.
I use an RB2011

Will run it with higher speeds above 50mbits so i think the hilink mode is the only possability or?
Have the router the normal WAN IP address when the stick runs in the hilink mode?

Thanks and best regards

as far is my experiences with USB (in common) on RB2011 board goes, they are very buggy
i got my huawei USB modem exchanged by my ISP to a ZTE LTE mobile router (in austria -> 3AT Webgate3) and i configured the ZTE router to bridge mode and since then no problems with it.

i never got a USB modems running clean or stable on RB2011 (no problems on RB951 thou)

Hey guys,

an update i got my stick working in the hi-link mode (stick is his own router)
The problem is now the mikrotik would get the private ip from the stick over dhcp and not the official wan ip.
Is there any way to get this working? In this way i cant configure the connection for port forwarding.

worked so far ... still i returned back to my trusty ZTE Webgate3 from 3Austria in bridge mode ;)

This is not possible with the E3372 and the Hilink software.
Limitation of the modem, not the router.

the 3webgate3 from ZTE is no longer produced
now the have the 3HuiGate which is manufactured by huawei ... so there is no bridge!
if you need the bridge mode ... use the 3HuiTUBE! it's a ZTE device and there you have the possibility to switch to bridge mode.
cheers

Mmmh ok, at the moment there is a promotion that you get 300mbit till October, so i thought about the 300mbit.
But i also found no cheap product for 300mbit and bridge mode. I will check the HuiTube
Did the old Webgate Support 300mbit?
-> Found my answer: No ;)
Another intersting thing, the old WebGate only had 100mbit RJ45 Connection, how it should be possible to get the 150mbit to one device?

Thanks for you infos ;)

PS: I would contact you per PN but the forum has no message system anymore or i cant find it?

Re: Problem with Huawei E3372 4G modem

Wed Jul 06, 2016 2:27 pm

Any update here?

I am using OpenWRT with the NCM Driver and ppp is working fine and as i know the 150mbit would be possible,
Also you recieve the NAT IP on the Router

the 3webgate3 from ZTE is no longer produced
now the have the 3HuiGate which is manufactured by huawei ... so there is no bridge!
if you need the bridge mode ... use the 3HuiTUBE! it's a ZTE device and there you have the possibility to switch to bridge mode.
cheers
Mmmh ok, at the moment there is a promotion that you get 300mbit till October, so i thought about the 300mbit.
But i also found no cheap product for 300mbit and bridge mode. I will check the HuiTube

Re: Problem with Huawei E3372 4G modem

Tue Aug 30, 2016 7:57 pm

I got one of thoese E3372h modems, it was working but I had it connected to my Asus router and there were some disturbances due to modem was configured as router.
I wanted to remove router functions from the modem, and before I found good ways to change it, I did a faulty configuration in HiLink modem settings.
I changed the default IP from 192.168.8.1 to 192.168.1.3 and I also removed the DHCP settings.
After this nothing hapens, I can not access the HiLink any longer, I can not configure it back to original settings.
Beside that, the 4G connection I already had (violet LED constant on) it is now disabled internet, the green is blinking twice every 2 seconds, meaning it is only powered on. No connection what so ever even with OK Sim card installed.

I find no open Ports in my windows PC when looking in control panel, device manager.
It does not respond to any of the IP addresses I try to enter.

Anyone know how to go further to recover this modem? Can I reset it back to original settings, or even continue with the PPP modem firmware change?
Or is it ready to be trash-binned?

Hello everyone,
[...] Both modem and the router work OK together, until I start downloading/uploading using wireless at maximum speed that the mobile provider allows. After a short while normally after downloading some 250 MB, the modem disconnects and won´t re-establish the connection unless I reboot the router. [...]
@matloh,
Have you fixed this very problem?
I have came across same issue as above. I have RouterOS ver 6.36.2 (Current) and Huawei E3372 4G modem in ppp mode.

It also crashes after some time when transfers moderate amount of data.

Error message in ppp interface I get is: "Status: terminating... - peer is not responding". Script automated reboot helps BUT it is hard to work this way for a longer time.

This is quite popular modem and worked just fine with basic TP-Link router.

Any permanent solution?

We have experienced that, with consumer modems. Sometimes modem firmware hangs and you need to power reset usb modem.

Glad to read direct info from MikrotikSupport.

Well, as I wrote in consumer TP-Link router it was very, very rare.

In my Mikrotik model RB2011UAS-2HnD it is:

- always when I try to pull data with highest possible speed (download from fast sites)
- very often after downloading some data over period of time ex 1G in couple of hours

It is serious problem, it is not occasionally.

Again, any permanent solution found? Any root cause found?

The best thing would be when mikrotik is importing the ncm driver from the e3372 stick. ;)
Its working really nice with openwrt.

At the moment i am using a router with openwrt firmwar in brdige mode with the mikrotik.
Not beautiful but working

I have been trying two guidelines from this thread:

- power supply for router with current > 2A - did not change a thing, E3372 stops working
- powered usb hub

For some reason E3372 does not connect to internet when in hub.

Is there any special setup needed when modem connected to HAMA 1:4 hub?

USB list gives me below info, hub is of course powered, modem starts to connect but instantly port gets reset.
/system resource usb print
# DEVICE VENDOR NAME SPEED
0 1:1 Linux 3.3.5 ehci_hcd RB400 EHCI 480 Mbps
1 1:2 USB_hub 480 Mbps
1 1:3 HUAWEI_MOBILE HUAWEI_MOBILE 480 Mbps

Have anyone had problem connecting Huawei E3372 modem using powered hub?

Modem can not connect to internet provider when in hub.

It is visible as usb modem in mikrotik.

Are you using RB2011 by any chance?
I'm also struggling to get this working -> http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php ... 48#p566648

Some posts suggests issues with usb on RB2011..

Hello,
I experience the same issue with my RB2011U and Huawei E3372 modem. Using USB hub didn't resolve a problem.
Does anybody know what could be a problem. Any solution found ?

What problem do you have and want to be solved?
Also, make sure you bark up the correct tree, e.g. when you don't want NAT. The NAT is happening in the Huawei,
so you should ask them to fix that.

We need to get ip address from provider to mikrotik and have full lte-speed.

PPP - not full speed
HiLink - not ip address directly to mikrotik
NCP - solving of problem, but not implemented by Mikrotik yet

Re: Problem with Huawei E3372 4G modem

This is probably a noob question but I am new to Mikrotik routers (even routers in general).

I got my E3372h (Hilink) working with excellent speed by adding a DHCP client and a NAT rule.
(It is however very frustrating that the router DHCP client does not get the public IP address of the
LTE connection. II have found no way around this). I am planning to use the 4G link as failover link
with a script, so not having the right public IP is not great but sufferable.

Now my question: I currently use the factory default firewall rules.
There are two rules that are explicitly mentioning my main WAN interface:

chain=forward action=drop connection-state=new connection-nat-state=!dstnat in-interface=sfp1 log=no
chain=input action=drop in-interface=sfp1 log=no

Shall I add a copy of each but with "in-interface=lte1" or does the NAT inside the modem perform this?

Thanks in advance.

Of course because the LTE stick has a NAT function it also blocks all incoming connections.
However, it never hurts to add another rule like the one that drops input from ether1, but for lte1.
It would be nice when the NAT in the stick could be circumvented (apparently there is a way, but I have
not found how that should work), but remember there is probably another NAT inside the mobile provider
network so this will still not give you a real public IP and untranslated traffic (required for some protocols).

I am using Telia here in Sweden and they have no NAT so incoming connections work fine if you can just get the public IP.

The irony is that the Dovado routers (http://dovado.se/en/) circumvent the IP mode so using the E3372 with those the
router gets the public IP so you can run a server, send SMS, check link status etc. while connected.

ANY reply from Mikrotik to our request?

PPP for Huawei E3372 not only full speed but most important is it crashes every time you try to download more data (higher bandwidth)!

Mikrotik please answer!

Exactly. This is the reason why I had to add dovado as a USB-Ethernet bridge. However, it would be much better to have LTE dongle managed by MikroTik.

matiaszon - I regret but no answer from Mikrotik :(((

Again Mikrotik - some your users need to use ppp to avoid multi NAT.

Please present your plans or workaround to fix this issue.

Explain more!

Is there any solution for this model e3372?

I have:
Model: Huawei E3372h
Hardware version: CL2E3372HM
Firmware: 21.180.01.00.00
Vendor: 0x12d1
Product: 0x1506

AND
RB 2011UiAS-2HnD

Has anyone managed to get it to work as LTE interface?
I only managed by ppp, but it's very unstable

After months of testing and trying different approaches I can tell: the RB2011 series is not working flawless with at least the Huawei E3372 and E8372 USB LTE sticks. There seems to be an issue with the USB port in that series, as even using other OTG cables and a USB hub with separate power didn't help - the LTE connection freezes/gets lost as soon as there is some workload on it, and it won't reconnect itself.

I dont use LTE anymore because it never worked fine.

I really dont understand why Mikrotik dont Support the Huawei Stick.
It is one of the most common out there.

You can install on any openwrt router the ncm driver and it is working fine and perfect.
Still i switched from LTE to a cable solution, dont wanna bother anymore about the pings and speed.

I use some of those E3372 sticks with the HiLink software and they work fine.
On some of the older MikroTik models there is not enough power to the USB but on newer devices like RB750Gr3 and hAP AC I have not had this problem.
I read about this NCM or NCP solution but cannot find info on it anywhere.
Is this a 3rd type of firmware for this stick?

Mikrotik, hello from 2019 ;)

e3372h + HAPac is still popular cheap solution to bring small offices online, or get fast occasional backup link at least in the east EU.

Is there any plans to support stick e3372h firmware (21.XXX) in full speed modes like NCM, NDIS? HiLink firmware (22.XXX) is limited to use additional NAT layers and has no possibility to get IP from Mobile ISP directly in RoS which limits IKEv2 setup significantly, PPP works but is isn't enough to get full speed LTE which is already running in Russia Ukraine Belarus for years and become more and more cost effective for small deployments.

Can't you use HiLink mode? It works OK. Of course it has the disadvantage of an extra NAT layer.

I have extended my post, with highlights of direct IP assignment limitation in HiLink. Huawei's NAT usually causes different problems with IPSec even with DMZ feature enabled ;(

I user Huawei E3372 in HiLink mode to make an L2TP/IPsec connection (over IPv4 with NAT, traditional IKE) to our central MikroTik router.
This is used for backup of our primary links (fiber, DSL) at remote locations. I use BGP to do the routing/failover. It works fine.
In our central router I have setup the L2TP server without IPsec and instead manually configured an IPsec policy with "port override"
instead of "port strict" (as it creates by default) to avoid the problem with double-NAT. This was done some time ago and there
have been changes in IPsec after that, I am not certain that this special handling is still required.
I have no detailed knowledge of IKEv2 so I don't know if there is a similar problem and workaround in that protocol.

Hi, i'm testing Huawei E3372h (Megafon M150-2) with hEX PoE (960PGS).
I'm don't remeber version ROS when testing, may be 6.46.5 (current stable)
My modem does't recognize command 'AT^SETPORT', and have a stick firmware (not hilink).
With default settings for ppp-out1 (when 'Dealing on demand' is checked), modem connecting to mobile wan, recieve some address on interface. But when some data transmited to wan over modem, connection lost and not recoverable. If uncheck 'Dealing on demand', then in logs printed 'dialing out... teminting... resetting link... dialing out...) and no connection.
I try version ROS 7beta - same things.
Then i try 6.45.8 (current long-term) with default configuration - same things. Then i reset configuration (with "No default configuration" checked), and now it works. Modem succesfully deailng out (when 'Dealing on demand' not checked), recieve some address and forward packets to wan successfully.
I can’t say exactly what was the matter, but now everything works.
