New CRS hardware? Show us some love

Wed Sep 07, 2016 10:05 am

It has been a while (well it feels like) since some decent new CRS products have been released. I for one am starved for some new CRS switches aimed for at the "enterprise" level, i.e 10Gbps ports etc. We have being doing a lot of FTTH deployments and the CRS switches are no longer on the radar. We have being using Edge-core for aggregation. I do not expect products to be dirt cheap and would rather pay for quality to a point. The current CRS is great for small deployments with a low point count, or copper.

@Mikrotik any new products that are aimed at the lower to mid end of enterprise deployments? E.g to compete with Edge-core, bare metal switches such as quanta, cumulus etc?

Can you give some more specific examples or what you would like to see? Take an example CRS product and tell me how to improve it. We will consider any suggestions.

Thanks Normis

1) Rackmount 24 x SFP and 2 or 4 SFP+ ports
2) Rackmount 24 x SFP+ and 2 x 10Gbps Copper
3) Rackmount 48 x 1Gbps copper and 4 x SFP+
All with normal kettle plug power connectors. Those are some of the things we are looking for.

From the ROS and hardware side some sort of stacking feature set would be amazing. e.g we are doing a FTTH install currently where a CRS is installed in each bin room that servers 6-12 house units. There are 360 units so we are using over 40 CRS switches. I know with most hardware stacking it is limited to up to 8 or something, but it would be great to control one CRS and push the config to the others.

WISP Switches
CRS with Qualcomm IPQ ARM CPU and 8 to 12 GigE copper ports, 2x SFP+ uplinks with passive PoE out on copper ports, DC input

SMB/Enterprise Switches
CRS with Multicore ARM CPU and 8x GigE copper ports, 2x SFP+ uplinks, Internal AC PSU
CRS with Multicore ARM CPU and 8x GigE copper ports, 2x SFP+ uplinks with 802.3af/at PoE on copper ports, Internal AC PSU
CRS with Multicore ARM CPU and 24x GigE copper ports, 2x SFP+ uplinks, Internal AC PSU
CRS with Multicore ARM CPU and 24x GigE copper ports, 2x SFP+ uplinks with 802.3af/at PoE on copper ports, Internal AC PSU

Switch Features in order of importance
Broadcast, Multicast and Unknown Unicast Storm Protection (hardware level filters)
RSTP, MSTP
LLDP
G.8032 Ethernet Ring Protection Switching
802.1x for switch ports

This will provide a variety of switches that can be used in most "edge" situations, or as an all-in-once router/switch in a branch office powering phones, AP's and IP cameras.

Yes I know you announced it in a MUM event.
It was announced for Q2 2016.
Allso in the hardware overview you present on the mikrotik site it is not there anymore.
So will this product ever see the light?

I will also add, there are really nice ARM SOC's for Networking coming out of Broadcom. Combining these with RouterOS and Broadcom's switch chipsets would make for truly epic CRS models:

+1 and the SFP counterparts, i.e SFP only versions as well. Also +1 to the newer arm models.

I just want to see a low power, low cost 24 port 10gb SFP+ switch...maybe with stacking cables or 40gbps uplinks. Although stacking would be preferred so you could treat multiple stacked units as a single switch and only have one management IP.

Or a version of ROS that we could load on ODM switches like the Quanta LB6M or LB8.

I agree with Paulct (the first post in this thread). It would be really great if we had the powerful RouterOS on a bare-metal switch like Edge-Core AS5812-54T. The switch CPU is just an Intel standard one; the code for the chip-set is all over the Internet. But using these kind of low cost hardware that is about 4 thousand euros a switch, we could get 48 X 10Gbps interfaces plus 6 x 40Gbps, non-blocking, with the powerfulness of RouterOS. And Mikrotik could do the same Cumulus Network, Pica8, etc. are doing...

I'm currently in the process of planning out infrastructure for a new (domestic/SOHO) location. I find myself wanting to standardise my infrastructure on Mikrotik (as is already the case in the routing and wireless department). However the lack of L2 features in the current CRS offering - chiefly IGMP snooping (for IPTV applications) and switch chip based 802.3ad - is making for a tough sell when I look at my comparison spreadsheet.
Yes there are workarounds by isolating broadcast domain, using balance-xor which works fine for most applications and what not, but let's be fair: given de competitiveness of the switch market, having to resort to workarounds is not really acceptable.
Considering the offering of other vendors (e.g. HP or D-Link) that do include a "complete" L2 feature stack and a comparable (and especially for the smaller switches e.g. 8-10 ports, lower) pricepoint, I just can't justify choosing Mikrotik, which is a shame really.
I just want to see a low power, low cost 24 port 10gb SFP+ switch...maybe with stacking cables of 40gbps uplinks. Although stacking would be preferred so you could treat multiple stacked units as a single switch and only have one management IP.

As I'm rewiring the place mentioned somewhat futureproof, I was researching options for 10GbE and the market is lacking here if you don't have enterprise budgets.
The only thing that comes close featurewise in the current MT range is the CCR1072-1G-8S+ (at a price).
Also as mentioned, stacking with unified management interface would be nice and most 'stackable switches' in the <1K€ range are not truelly stackable and just offer links of frames in the WebUI. Again: opportunity to do things right here (e.g. a CAPsMAN-like feature for managing switch functionality?).

Some suggestions for a 10GbE switch portfolio:
  • "CRS-311-1G-10S+": small SFP+ core switch for smaller infrastructures to bundle existing CRS-2xx offering with SFP+ uplinks on an LC-based 10GbE backbone
  • "CRS-325-1G-24S+": as described by mpreissner above.
  • "CRS-326-24G-2T": 24 port Gbit access layer / top of rack switch with 2 10GBASE-T uplinks to allow gradual upgrade on existing Cat6a infrastructure
  • "CRS-328-24T-4S+": 24 port 10GBASE-T core switch with 4 SFP+ uplinks to tie in existing CCR offering.

RB260GSP with outdoor enclosure would be very welcome or RB750P outdoor Powerbox with gigabit ports.

RB260GS in outdoor enclosure with 4x or 5x POE in would be great.

This thread is specifically for CRS hardware, not SwOS based prodcuts...

- Lack of 802.3af/at PoE is usually the main reason for me to look for other brands for my clients who use multiple wifi aps and voip phones.
- 48port model would be nice to have, with 10G ethernet and sfp+ uplinks
- STP and DHCP snooping on hardware level
- LACP on hardware level

ps - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Quanta-LB6M-10G ... SwgY9XfCli

If Mikrotik could make one of those + routerOS = win. I would happily pay $1000-$1500 for dual PSU's + 24x SFP+ and a warranty.

I've posted about desired CRS configurations in the past.

For my uses, I'm mostly missing 8 to 12 port Gigabit POE with SFP+ uplink capability. And a CRS model to open the doors to 10Gbit for heavy desktop or servers with for instance 6x10Gbase-T and 4xSFP+ much like Ubiquiti has recently released. If you want to be modern, make the 10Gbase-T ports 2,5Gbit and 5Gbit compatible.

With those added to the product portfolio, a lot more configurations can be built with the CRS226 and CCR1009 in the mix for instance. Anything from a small (home) office with high bandwidth needs to starting server parks.

Stuff like 48x 10Gbase-T or SFP+ is fun but will be much too expensive for the areas where Mikrotik is currently mostly deployed.

I can only concur with most that's already said.

48-port versions
Switch hardware LACP (802.3ad)
Switch hardware DHCP snooping, IP source guard

Also a all port PoE+ version. (So that one does not have to buy something like ZyXEL GS1920)

Sigh...http://www.ignitenet.com/products/fusionswitch-fiber/ is $499. Now only if Mikrotik could have a unit like that with dual power supplies. And a more expensive SFP+ only version.

We are waiting for a long time the RB260GS(P). I wonder why not is available, since summer.

I hope when finally arrive (~beginning of January) it will have upgraded to CRS3xx series?
The new recently announced CRS317 has both SwOS and RouterOS are supported - selectable as a boot option.

RB260 isn't match to the MikroTik switch CRS series.
