NAT Performance for 1Gbps Internet

Fri Sep 23, 2016 7:08 pm

Hi Guys,
I've been combing over the forums and hardware specs but need a little help determining which hardware to try. I help a few small businesses with their internet connections and a new ISP has started coming in with very cheap 1Gbps internet connections. This is great but it presents a problem, now I can't find anything that can NAT that fast that comes in range of a small business budget! I've never tried any of the Mikrotik stuff but a few forum searches mentioned the brand so I thought I'd look into it. Requirements are very simple, fast NAT, no routing, and hoping to prioritise VoIP traffic - even though that might not even be needed with a 1Gbps connection.

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,
WiGuy ;)

RB3011 could come close, provided fasttrack is used (no QoS).

Next comes RB1100AHx2, followed by CCR1009 which for a small price increase has twice the power.

Is it possible to set your ISP ONT in "bridge" mode so that the router gets the public IP? In such case, how do you authenticate with your ISP, pppoe or DHCP?

ISP doesn't require authentication, they deliver fiber into the business location and provide a media converter to RJ45. Router gets a public IP strait from DHCP, no PPPoE or authentication.

So if I want QoS, I should look at the RB1100AHx2 or CCR1009? Is it easy to configure QoS?

You can go with RB3011. I have it, also RB1100AHx2 and both do the job with queues, mangle, address lists, filters and so on.

As Inox said, a 3011 will do, as you won't be encapsulating all WAN traffic into PPPoE packets (which ROS do by software).
