RB411GL and OPENWRT

Tue Dec 13, 2016 11:35 am

Hi,
I am trying to run OpenWrt on RB411GL (there is no serial) but after load of image via TFTP the RB just beeps and it is not responding (over ethernet to be specific)

So if there is anyone who has accomplished that - running OpenWrt on RB411GL - I'd like to ask couple of questions:
(I followed these instructions - https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/mikrotik/rb411 and used tftpd64 on 64bit W10)

- can I use https://downloads.openwrt.org/barrier_b ... tramfs.elf on RB411GL
- is there any preset ethernet setting in https://downloads.openwrt.org/barrier_b ... tramfs.elf
(why am I asking? in the guide mentioned above there is a line saying "now back to the serial console: ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.250 up" so I am assuming the eth0 is not up by default)
- if not, how to set ethernet interface without serial (RB411GL does not have one)

Thanks a lot!

This is a Mikrotik user forum (RouterOS), you may have more luck on OpenWRT's.

Bear in mind that if you're going to use an atheros based wireless card you'll be switching from a rock solid wireless driver, to a crappy (not OpenWRT's fault but HAL portion limitations) half-cooked one where radio lockups are really frequent.

Curious, why the need for OpenWRT?

Likely because openWRT has way more features than routerOS? DNScrypt is just one example.

In this case I would put it on virtual machine and not having a problem with hacking a 411...

RB411GL has very low power usage and cheaper than a PC hence why people use routerboards with openwrt sometimes. For those projects or even for home use.
