Ubiquiti UF-SM-10G optic in Mikrotik

Wed Feb 01, 2017 11:25 pm

Was about to buy a pair of Mikrotik 10G SFP+'s but just spotted my supplier has a twin pack of Ubiquiti UF-SM-10G for less than half the price of a single Mikrotik module.

I've never had any problem with Mikrotik gear being fussy about other vendor's optics, but has anyone tried using these modules and able to confirm first hand whether they work? (or don't work?)

Thanks, Chris

Haven't used these ones yet but I'd be very very surprised if you run into issues.I know the Ubnt SFP MMF modules work fine in all my MTK equipment.

Most of these SFP modules come from a handful of huge factories in Asian pumping these things out in huge volumes for OEMS.I think all my Dell SFP modules say they were produced by Finisar and the kind folks at Dell put a sticker on top and jacked the price up by around 5 times what a unbranded Finisar module would cost me

I'm well aware that most are made by the same company. I've had good success with both Prolabs and Solid Optics in the past with their 'OEM' optics with manufacturer coding in them. It's just an i2c EEPROM inside with the manufacturer's secret code in it that turns them from one brand to another.

Actually I saw a project a few years ago that used an Arduino to reprogram the EEPROMs. You just needed to butcher an old switch to get an SFP socket. Can't find the link now though annoyingly.

Replying to my own thread.... seems the answer is 'yes' they do work, in my scenario at least. I'm going from a CCR1009 to a CRS226.

Strange though that the CCR does not show the SFP information (vendor, serial, etc) and does not give options to advertise 10G speed even though it says it is linked at 10G.

The CRS226 does, however:

Just updated the CCR to the latest ROS in case that solved it but no change. Any staff member care to comment on why this is?

We buy some SFP+ AOC cables from optcore.net, and it works well up to know.

Using UF-SM-10G in between CRS317-1G-16S+ and port flaps up and down 10 times a day... The strange thing sometimes port flaps only on side (time is synchronized, fw is the same):
