Indoor Housing Doesn't Fit MMCX Cards Right

Tue Jul 27, 2010 5:36 pm

Has anyone else noticed that when using the 433 series of boards in the RB433U case that the top miniPCI slot can't be used with MMCX cards due to clearance problems?

The MMCX connector hits the top of the enclosure and prevents it from being closed when a pigtail is connected.

Mikrotik - any chance the enclosure size will be updated to properly fit your new series of MMCX cards?

And...the case is so small that the bottom slot impedes use of one or more of the antenna slots.

Has anyone used two MMCX Cards in a case?
I want to use the new rb493G board with 2x r52Hn cards to make a home Gigabit router with both 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz 802.11n.

Just to be clear... We're all looking for an official answer from Mikrotik here...

And while you're at it, it would be nice to see a way to actually access the USB port on the RB493G, RB433UAH, etc. when using said case.

Or the microSD slot without being necessary to disassembly everything.
And btw a few more connector openings (even SMA) wouldn't harm anyone. Even when using only two mini PCI cards, somehow the fourth output has to find a way out. :)

isn't there a special case for this?

anyway, yes, we know about the issue. there are other cases readily available from our MFM manufacturers:

Ummm... Cutting square hole in the case 3 inches away from the USB port (which is so small most USB cable heads can't even fit through) does not count as making the USB ports accessible.

It would have made much more sense to put the hole in the side of the case and simply turn the USB ports 90 degrees, or turn them vertical and put the hole in the top of the case.

I think the point here is that we are all concerned that Mikrotik is not spending enough time considering the application of their boards in the design phase.

Making a 3 x miniPCI board that can't even hold 3 of your own top-notch wireless cards is a prime example of this.

The stacked miniPCI design might be great for some designs, but not all. With the 4xx series, when miniPCI cards are added, especially 900MHz modules, the board is extremely long and narrow, precluding the use of a great many cases with it, including your own.

Another consideration to make is that not everyone wants the ethernet/power ports sticking out to the side. Many of us use cases that make that configuration extremely difficult to work with. Ethernet ports that emerge point up from the board would be very helpful.

Bottom line is that we need a board that can house all Mikrotik radio modules in any configuration and doesn't require us to remove two miniPCI cards to swap out the bottom one. All radio modules need to be directly accessible.

we sell most of these boards without any cases, that's why we have the MFM program and the distributors who package the devices in all kinds of enclosures. we have changed the indoor case design to fit the MMCX connectors, but it will be a while before they reach our customers (they have to be made first).

Thanks!

Any chance we could also get a short snap-in USB extension to bring the ports to the case opening?

I hate to reopened such old thread, but I'm also still wainting for this USB cable pass-through cable.

I haven't found a MFM indoor chasis that will let us use USB.

I tought that this square hole would eventually get a USB external connector, did someone found a decent way to hook up USB devices using CA493?

Does anybody know of a case that allows more than one wireless card to be fiitted properly onto RB493G, pls.

With Mikrotik's CA/493 case, only one wireless card can be fitted without touching the case from the inside.

Many thanks
