RB250GS and POE

Fri Dec 24, 2010 12:05 am

There doesn't seem to be any clear information for POE with this switch?
I have no idea which ports, voltages etc and have not used Power Over Ethernet before.
All i know is that my POE device http://store.netgate.com/-P1104.aspx doesnt work.

Can somebody advise how to setup POE on this switch?

Thanks

You can power the 250GS via passive PoE on its first port, but you cannot power any devices connected to the switch via PoE. It's a PoE client, so to speak. It doesn't provide power to other devices.

Can somebody provide any info about how 250GS works with PoE and gigabit? Does it support "phantom power" technique as described in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_over_Ethernet and provide full gigabit, or does it switch that port to 10/100mbps mode?

I need to power up a RB250GS via gigabit link, so I'm confused whether it's safe to plug other end to my TP-Link gigabit switch, since pairs 4-5/6-7 are then hot.. What kind of injection equipment do I need? Are these injectors some smart active devices, or simply dumb sockets with wires attached to it in some specific sequence. Any advice or insights would be appreciated :)

You can power up 250GS through PoE at 1Gbps speed by using this injector: http://routerboard.com/RBGPOE. 250GS does not support powering from IEEE 802.3af compliant device and it is recommended not to connect such device to port1.

Is it mandatory to use MikroTik only injectors? They look very much like these: http://www.wifi-stock.com/prods/POE-passive.jpg

Product you are linking to does not appear to support Gigabit. We can only recommend to use: http://routerboard.com/RBGPOE

Well, they don't seem to be available here.. And at the quantities we need, shipping them from abroad doesn't seem to be a very attractive solution. Could you please provide some additional info of how they are working, so we can maybe look for a substitute?
