Power up routerboard (rb433) with usb port?

Wed Mar 09, 2011 7:08 am

At the moment I'm using separate power point for my server and my rb433 at data center. Extra cost for that extra power point. To save cost I would like to power up my rb433 with the server usb port. Is there any better way to do that cause as far as I know that there isn't enough power to achieve that?

There is no way to power rb from usb port. Usb port is giving 5V and max 500mA so about 2,5 watts. RB433 require minimum 10 volts and 4 watts without wireless cards and much more watts with wireless cards. So even making some dc to dc converter, usb would not supply enough power.

You can get 12V from hard drive power connectors inside. That should work. They are giving tens of amps when power is on.
