Routerboard with USB Hub to support more than 1 3G Modem

Tue Mar 29, 2011 12:54 pm

Hello,

I'd like to use 4 to 5 3G USB Modems with 1 routerboard.

Is that possible using a USB Hub for instance?
Would all modems work or each USB port on RBs strictly support 1 device?

Yes, it's possible. We have tested this and it's working fine.

Hi Normis,

I also want to use this type of setup, and I see there has been other threads discussing about USB power injectors on 411's. I'm unsure which routerboards need power injectors and which don't, as I'd prefer to avoid using them if possible. Which RB should I buy? And do I need a powered USB hub or will a passive one be fine?

Rich

do you need one miniPCI? RB411U doesn't need USB power injection. Powered HUB is needed only if your 3G device needs it.

Understood. Is there a RB that will power a 3G modem (assuming it needs power) without a powered hub?

a powered hub is only needed if your device needs extra power. 99% of 3G modems work with RB411U without any powered hub. This is required for more power hungry devices, usually not modems

Hi mate,

I came across this problem and it was the lack of external power on the usb hub.
Once I added an external power supply I managed to use 4 3G modems at the same time.

But I have a different issue now.

I use 2 fast modems (1mbit upload) and 2 slow (300kbit upload).

I have bonded the 2 fast into a one aggregated link and the other 2 into another aggregated link (using bonding with eoip tunnels)

The slow modems give aggregated traffic of about 600kbit (which is perfect since each modem give ~300kbit).
The fast modems though do not have the same results.
I can barely get 900kbit and each modem can give 1mbit upload.

All the settings are the same between both bonding interfaces and the eoip tunnels (both slow and fast modems are on the same router)

you should make a separate topic about Bonding.

ok stop, we just found that USB HUB could have some problems with RB4xx devices, they work fine on PCs. Currently it might not work. We will see if it's possible to fix it.

Those kind of problems have to do with the issue I described or it's irrelevant?

I have the same problem with my RB433UAH. When i use more than four modems with a powered USB hub they get disconnected without a reason. I need to connect 10 3G modems to my RouterBoard with two 5 port usb hubs one on each USB port of the RB433 is there any way to make this configuration run stable? is there a fix out there or a recommended setting to use?

Thanks

i have rb750gr3, tplink usb 3.0 hub with 4 ports, and 3 usb 4g modem e3372s-153. but, only 2 usb modem active, and 1 invalid usb. the usb hub is absolutely normal, i've test the usb hub with my aio pc, attached to its usb 2.0 also 3.0, all usb modems shown up.

please help me fix this, because i've send mail to support@mikrotik.com without any feedback.
