Hotspot for 500 client

Thu Jun 30, 2011 7:42 pm

Sorry I am new with MikroTik and my english is not so good,

I have to cover ~ 0.8 square mile with wireless (2.4Ghz),

And 500 client can access with password and mac address,

My plane is to use ubnt Bullet to each client ,so I don't worry about the distance,

Betwen Base Station and CPE,

My real worry is to hold 500 client simultaneously (for the worst case)

My question is : What RouterBoard I have to use ? and how mush Boards?

Do I have to connect each board to sector antenna ? or use spliter 3 way to each antenna ?

I want to use 1 base staion in middle or the area.

Who can I control each user, do I have to use RB1100 ? or I can use the RouterBoard to control each user ?

Thanks for answering

One RouterBOARD + RADIUSserver is enough for such setup.
RouterBOARD 800 will be more than enogh for 500 clients.

Use RADIUS server on separate server or MikroTik RouterOS for client authorization and accounting, or alternatively use User Manager as RADIUS server, even on the same RB800.

Thanks,

Just making thing clear , I can use RB800 also as RADIUS server and controling the user on the same board ? (I don't need additional hardware?)

IS RADIUS server is build in side the RouterOS or I have to install something ?

Thanks again

We are waiting OmniTik for WiFi Hotspot areas. Now we are using Ubiquiti pico stations, but we need hotspot gateway for the each areas. In this case we think only RouterBoard will be not expensive and advanced solution. Only one disadvantage of RB is outdoor cases. But I saw pics of Omnitik. It will be very good for us.

500 simultaneous(ACTIVE) client on 1 rb 800.
It means 433ah should atleast handle a 100. I have 3 seperate 433AH with R52H Cards connected to 3 Airmax Sectors and i suspect.

Cause in reality I can see only 30 simultaneous(ACTIVE) user on each sector, and moreover if there is even 2-3 user using TORRENTS the links starts to choke. Latency goes very very high. My CPU on routerboard never exceeds 10%. Total TX Bandwidth shown is less than 4mbps but still....

I also sceptical that one RB800 can handle 500 active users (simultaneous),

Maybe theoretically the Software alows 500 users,

Can anybody have experience holding large quantity of users (simultaneous) ?

I did 1,800 simultaneous Hotspot users on an RB1100, so 500 seems totally doable on an RB800. Of course that's Hotspot processing only - that doesn't account for wireless contention if the RB800 also holds the radios. 500 clients actually all concurrently talking over just 3 radios would be impossible, or at least would perform really badly.

i think we r talking about concurrent wireless clients users not just user management...

Our old router was RB1000U, and we added 5 firewall, 2 NAT, 4 mangle rules, 15 static route. When active hotspot users 290, CPU usage was 97%. Only difference between yours is my hotspot is all ethernet without wireless. It means clients was always connected to network. Maybe therefor my CPU was high usage. Now we replaced it PowerRouter2282.

this is very unlikely. you must have had something else, and that something was poorly configured. just a few basic rules don't cause such usage with only 290 users.
