Fried RB450G?

Tue Sep 20, 2011 4:23 am

I made a very stupid mistake. Got a brand new RB450G, was in the process of setting it up, and proceeded to accidentally plug a PoE cable (powered by a UniFi powered PoE adapter) into the second port of the RB450G. The web interface immediately stopped responding and the unit is no longer accessible, even after factory reset. Here's what's weird:

1) Factory reset seems to work just fine. It takes a couple minutes and then goes through the regular boot process with the same beeps I heard before the accident.
2) The second port no longer shows link but only AFTER fully booting. The LED on the port lights up on initial power and also shows link until it fully boots. The rest of the ports will always link but the unit will not respond to pings on 192.168.88.1
3) No signs of damage on the board, but who knows

Considering the fact that the unit doesn't exhibit any issues while booting, is there any way to salvage it? Is there some other reset I could be trying? I'm assuming I have to eat the $100 and buy a new board, but I figured I'd ask.

Thanks!

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Netinstall

Check the note after the first paragraph. You might be able to get it in pxe without a serial. I have never tried like this. I always have a serial.

Get a USB to serial adapter. They're fairly cheap, and very useful.

But that's besides the point. You have access to the router, so you don't need a serial cable for NetInstall. You can administratively via SSH or Winbox to set the boot options and reboot into PXE mode.

Personally I think the board is damaged, though.

Well I'll be damned! The netinstall over ethernet actually worked! The first time I installed with it I was still unable to connect after it finished, but the eth2 port was working again which was promising. I went through the netinstall again but this time I unchecked "Keep old configuration" and gave it the stock IP of 192.168.88.1/24 and that did it.

Thanks for the tip!

Your welcome but I also agree with fewi. I wouldn't put it production until you are positive it's not damaged.
