Routerboard RB800 For Authentication Gateway

Sun Oct 02, 2011 1:37 pm

Is this a good choice?

I'm looking for an upgrade to my current dd-wrt gateways running chilli. The hardware is dated now and I have a lot more users on board, which will also increase over the next few months.

The RB800 looks like a good choice. I will need it to run pppoe, radius authentication, firewall and some sort of QoS/Traffic shaping. Would it be powerful enough to support up to 150 simultaneous clients? or is there a better choice out there?

Any advice is appreciated.

It'll do fine for 150 users.

I'd get an RB1100, though. A steal at 400 bucks. I've run 1,700 users on those so that gives you lots of room for growth.

fewi - not sure if I can post this here, but would you be interested in some work helping me to set up an RB800 as a hotspot gateway?

The unit would need to do:

PPPoE (WAN Connection)
DynDNS
Hotspot Authentication using my current RADIUS server
Firewall
Quality Of Service

Sorry, I am not looking for any side work.

mikrotik.com has a list of consultants though, some of which list Hotspots as their specialties.
