My Setup, after reading many tips from this forum :)

Thu Feb 09, 2012 3:52 pm

Hi All!

I am new to this forum and on Mikrotik equipment. I have now spent MANY hour reading articles in this forum and i have learned a LOT! Thanks to you all!!
I will now try to summarice everything i have learned and show you how i plan to setup one of my locations:

Task: Setup a location where i have one end in a 20km PtP link, and a base station (sector antenna serving client stations).
(The location is a barn where i use one wall for my PTP antenna and one for my sector antenna.)

PtP:
PtP Antenna: JRC-29 DuplEX-SMA Precision (with R-SMA connectorer) http://en.jirous.com/antenna-5ghz/jrc-29-dx-pr
Gentlebox JR-300 with RB800 and R52Hn radiocard: Gentlebox JR-300 http://en.jirous.com/Accessories-complements/jr-300
Adaptor N right angle for horizontal connector http://en.jirous.com/Accessories-complements/angle_N and
Pigtail R-SMA/MMCX http://en.jirous.com/Accessories-complements/r-sma_mmcx

So far so good :)

switch:EDITED: Will not need a switch since RB800 comes with 3 Gb ports.= direct connectable.
To connect the base to my PtP i use RB750GL http://routerboard.com/RB750GL or maybe
RB250GS will give better speeds?: http://routerboard.com/RB250GS
(comment:I will need a power convertor to power the swith..)
Any better ideas for a GiG switch? 24V?

Base station:
Alternative 1:
Antenna: 90° Ubiquity AirMax 5GHz Carrier Class Sector 2x2 MIMO Antennas 20dBi Hi-Gain Airmax Sector 5G-90-20 http://www.ubnt.com/basestation
RB800 & R52Hn radiocard. Then i will need a box . Any boxes that fits a RB800 mounted directly on such a antenna?
Problem: Ubiquity has a 6dbm loss compared to 3 dbm loss on other vendors. I might need 2 sectors and use the 45° center beam to get max throughput. requires good (100mhz) freq. separation)

Alternative 2:
I have found a antenna from ITELITE that can house a RB800 aswell: http://www.itelite.net/offer.php?n=39&lang=en Anyone tried this one?

Clients:
RBSTX: http://routerboard.com/RBSXT or
sextant http://routerboard.com/RBSEXTANT5HnD

Earthing and shielding:
I have seen the manual regarding correct earthing and understand that all my RB's should be directly earthed to ground using a pole and correct dimentioned earth cable and that the TP cable should NOT connect the shield to my switch, only to my RB. This is to avoid lightning following my TP cable and potentially destroy ALL my equipment. Use the shield as SHIELD.
I will also mount a lightning antenna to direct the lightnig to ground somewhere near the barn with a GOOD earthing cable. Lightning follows the less resistance to earth...

Lightning arrestor on antenna?
Since i have a box mounted close onto my JRC antenna i only need the small pigtail to connect to it. I am not sure about the antenna if it is DC grounded and if i need a lightning arrestor on it? Anyone? I know i will suffer a bit in speed if i use one. What about my sector antenna. Will i need an arrestor on that one?
EDITED: I got a reply from jirous.com: "They are not DC grounded. if you will use short pigtail, you will not need lightning protector, but if your will use long cable so yes. Have a nice time!"

Power:
I want battery power as backup. I live in Norway so solarpanels are out of the question (have 2.4 insolation) so i will need to connect to existing powergrid .
(But if i had more sun i would go for a clean solar solution becouse i would be safer for lightning problems Do not need earth ground at all (picture sitting inside a car)).
I have estimated that i will need 16W for a RB800 and R52Hn running on max, so for both the base station and PTP i multiply by 2 and get 32W. So after some math i will need 4 100Ah 12V batteries to be able to run this station for 3 days without external power. (200Ah, 24V)

There are 2 ways to setup this:
(chargers shall have 10% of the capacity as the batteries. 200AH = 20A, 100AH = 10A)
1: One 24V charger 20A:

or
2: Two 12V chargers 10A:

Monitoring power outages?
Thanks to Matrot2 a member in this forum he recommended a device called UPS-MT-Monitor that can be recogniced in Dude and Winbox so i can get alerts from low voltage situations.
http://tandem.ck.ua/ups_mtm-eng.php and physical connected like this:

Thanks Matrot2

Low Power Disconnect Module
To make sure i will not damage my batteries and RB i will need to cut the power at a certain level by using a Low power Disconnect Module like this:
Image
http://www.altronix.com/index.php?pid=2&model_num=LPD
I will set the dipswitches to 24V.
The power will be cut at approx 20V and restored at 23V.

POE for Ptp or base station? (barn)
I will not use POE but connect normal power to the boards. This is becouse of the option i have with the JP5 DIS POE Jumper and the fact that i want to use batteries:
From the manual:"This jumper will disable the 802.11af compatible smart PoE, and also lower the undervoltage protection threshold to approx 10V, allowing to use this device with passive PoE in 24V Solar power installations" (or with my batteries as low as 10V). Have i misunderstood something here?
I hope to be able to run on batteries until they reach 10V (20V when in paralell).

Grounding and POE for client stations?
I will use a chielded cable and cut the shield before entering my POE injector inhouse. I want this inhouse since it is the easiest for my customers and the cleanest setup.
I know i should use a proper grounding from the RB and to earth aswell, but i think that is to much work for each customer.
I rather replace boards as they are not so expensive. Comments?

Inside my barn i will have a box housing my switch w/power converter, and all my batteries & chargers.

I will create a drawing soon, but please comment on this first!

I will edit this post with new information so people can see the updated setup at all times.
Thanks!

Monitoring power outages?
I have seen some scripts out there and i belive someone can give me a tip on how to do this from my RB800?
I would like to get a email when i am on battery power and when i am restored. (voltage reports?)
Thanks!
You can do something like this: http://tandem.ck.ua/img/electronics/um1.jpg
The rest is described here: http://tandem.ck.ua/ups_mtm-eng.php
Good luck.

Thanks Matrot2!

The UPS-MT-Monitor looks like the tool i need.
Will the UPS-MT-24B also work for my 4 batteries? Or are my batteries to large? (2 in serie & 2 in paralell to get 24V 200Ah)

Thanks!
Any other comment anyone?

I didn't see you say what kind of battery charger you were going to use. Keep in mind that many standard chargers aren't designed to charge a battery AND power a load. Most will see the load and keep trying to charge the battery, causing it to cook. I'd recommend the Samlex 1230a for your charging as it has a setting for using it just the way you are talking about. I have 2 towers running this way and they work great!
