throughput capabilities

Tue Jul 03, 2012 10:19 am

I'm building a backhaul which i'd like to be able to handle 100-150 mbps throughput peaks.

It's in an OSPF network running MPLS.
i'll be using the link bonding (round robin) to put together 3 wireless links between the towers.

i don't have much experience with high throughput applications and i want to be sure i get the right routers.
i'm considering the RB2011, but it reads pretty light on horsepower even compared to a RB450g.
would it do the trick or would i need to step it up to a 1100ah?

i've looked at the throughput ratings on the spec sheet and i'm not sure i'm reading them right.
is "frame size" just MTU? if so even the RB750 should pass over 400mbps.. but on the bench i don't get that with a pair of 750s, so whats am i doing wrong?

any input is appreciated, thanks

is there a sizing guide for router processing power somewhere?

thanks,

Performance over softrouters are complicated question.
Each new feature is imposing processing overhead, and official tests are just done for some predefined configurations.
IMO you should test by yourself and estimate how much horsepower you will have, and how much each new feature add overhead to CPU load.

If you'll use all 5 ports maybe you will have around 400Mbps.
If you are using only 1 port you are limited to the 100Mbps because RB750 is not a Gigabit router.
