RB951G-2HnD WiFi works very poorly with Nokia N900

Sat Jun 29, 2013 4:29 am

Standard AP setup with ether1 and wlan1 bridged, WPA2-PSK AES; short distances (a few meters) and little interference (at home). Tried both 5.25 and 6.1, no difference. No issues with a laptop but trying to ping the phone results in high latency (up to a few seconds) and packet loss. The RB951G-2HnD was indended as a replacement for and old TP-Link TL-WA501Gv1 which had been working fine for a few years but recently started to have some issues, sometimes station connected but no traffic etc. Now I'm using an old Loco2 (legacy 2, not M2) as AP, and it works fine with the N900 too (with normal ~100ms latency). It may have something to do with power saving not supported by MikroTik, but then I wouldn't expect that to be supported by that cheap old TP-Link either. Has anyone else seen similar issues? Any plans to fix it? Thanks.

Are you using the newest firmware??? (This will be v3.xx) They did some stuff with power savings in the newer firmwares.

Yes, the latest 3.xx firmware that came with ROS 5.25. Do you mean "they did some stuff" as they fixed it, or they broke it and it should be downgraded?

No, I mean that in some of the earlier 2.2x firmwares, there was a power saving bug where it wouldn't work with windows 7 after the pc came out of power saving mode, and it was fixed in newer 3.xx firmwares.

This is probably some sort of the same issue with what you are seeing.

There might be even newer firmware with 6.1

Tried 6.1 with firmware 3.08 too, no change. I also have a RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN and will try it when time permits, hope it will work better.

I stumbled across this thread while trying to resolve the same issue. A Nokia N900 had big problems communicating reliably with my RB751U-2HnD running the latest updates (RouterOS 6.9, firmware 3.12) - there was much packet loss and packets that did get there in the end was sometimes buffered for multiple seconds. The N900 had no such problems communicating with any of my other non-Mikrotik APs, but it was only the N900 that had problems with the Mikrotik. So it isn't clear to me whether it is the Nokia or the Mikrotik that's misbehaving here.

In any case, after much experimentation I found a workaround that might be helpful to others who stumble across this thread in the future: Reduce the power savings mode on the Nokia to On (intermediate) instead of the default On (maximum) (or something along those lines, anyway). This setting is hidden behind an Advanced button in the WiFi connection setup screen. With this change in place, the two devices can communicate properly.

I've just tried RB951-2n running 6.30.2 with wireless-cm2 and it seems to work fine now. I can ping the phone and get variable high latency (normal with power saving) but no packet loss anymore (even with the N900 max power save setting) - finally. Thanks!
