Mikrotik DAC SFP+ Cables compatibility

Fri Aug 08, 2014 12:23 pm

Dear users,

we have some Dell Servers, Dell switches and Mikrotik CCR routers. We want to use Mikrotik DAC SFP+ cables for the connections between those products.

Do you have any idea if Mikrotik DAC cables are compatible with Dell equipment? Specific products are Dell R620 servers with Intel X520 SFP+ network cards, Mikrotik CCR-S+ routers and Dell S4810P 10G SFP+ switch.

Thank you

1. Our DACs are compatible with Intel X520 series network adapters.

2. On Dell S4810P by standards our DACs are compatible. However as I am not familiar with Dell switch software I can't comment on if there is or ins't vendor lock in place for non-Dell branded SFP/DACs.

1. We currently sell only passive DACs

2. Mainly the difference between passive and active DACs are in max length and power consumption(per-end). Passive DACs will have length limitation up to 8 meters and will consume less power. Active DACs can be up to 20 meters in length, but will consume more power. One more thing to keep in mind is to check if HW in which you want to use DAC supports active or passive versions of these things.

I am building a large 10Gbit network with Dell PowerConnect equipement.
Core switches are 2x Dell PowerConnect 8132F in stack (same as the new N4000 series), field switches are 5548(P) models also stacked.
All connections between core switches and field switches are teamed 10Gbit connections.

For all the connections to the field switches we are using Mikrotik DAC for short range (up to 3m) and Mikrotik SFP+ with optical cables for longer range (up to 200 m).
We are using unbranded Active DAC cables for 10m.

The 8100 switches are reporting 'UNSUPPORTED OPTICAL' when we insert a non Dell SFP+ or DAC but they are all working very good.

You can insert a command into your switch config to disable the 'UNSUPPORTED.......' message.
The command is: 'service unsupported-transceiver'

In short: the Mikrotik 10Gbit SFP+ modules and 10Gbit DAC cables are working good with Dell switches.

Hi Folks,

Sorry for raising the same question, but I need to clarify that before we order the hardware.

I'm looked through compatibility matrix MikroTik SFP module compatibility table. It says CCR1072 does support SFP+ 1m/3m DAC, but I want to make sure that CCR1072 does support Cisco SFP-H10GB-CU1M, 2M, and 3M.

Did anyone test it?

Please help.
