Wireless Link... Which Mikrotik product should I buy?

Wed Aug 27, 2014 6:03 pm

Hi Guys,

I currently have a pair of SXT Lite 5 Tiks which I use for a 300M Wireless link and they perform perfectly, I however now need to build an 8 mile (13km) line of sight point to point link and I wondered what the best product was to use?

According to a survey there is line of site and there is already a wireless link present at the location between the two sites which is managed by a third party and incredibly unreliable (like most of the products they service) we have a 25M building on one site and a 50M one at the other so height isn't an issue but I imagine lining them up might be!

Thanks in advance.

Yes. It is expected that you can pass 400-500 Mbits /s if perfectly aligned and tuned.

Start with spectral scan, aim antennas just roughly, select best frequency, finish fine aiming according signal strength and then play with power and wifi protocols...

Oh of course! I will indeed!

What throughput would you expect me to get on a link like this?

If I used the link calculator correctly (http://www.mikrotik.com/test_link.php) it seems that you should get -49dbi signal at reciver when used full power to transmit. As it is needed to get -72 for the highest nominal speed, you can reach 866Mbit/s quite surely in the ideal world. Reality will be determined by local conditions, mainly by interference (selected frequency). Maybe you will not be able to use full power (local law regulations), so this will also affect the result. So it is not predictable what will be the expectable speed, but you can be sure it will be good.
