CRS109-8G-1S-2HnD-IN vs RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN

Fri Sep 12, 2014 6:58 pm

Hi all,

I have to repeat my question, because my last one disappeared..

I am going to buy one of MikroTik products, and I need your help.

About me:
I am a developer and big fan of linux, command line tools, etc. I see RouterOS very attractive to me and I am going to learn RouterOS, but at the moment I'm not so strong in "networking".

About my home network:
1) PC connected to LAN with wire
2) some Laptops and Phones connected with Wifi
3) one server with many virtual servers

I need your help to choose between these products: CRS109-8G-1S-2HnD-IN and RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN.

I see "CRS109-8G-1S-2HnD-IN" is newer, but I cannot understand why it is located behind "Switches" menu item and not in "Wireless for home and office" (like "RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN")?

Please help me to make a right decision.

Thanks, and sorry for my bad english

Have a nice day!!
Arunas :)

I suggest to choose CRS109. It is still Router witch ROS lvl5 :) but have more gig ports and supports 802.3af .
So if you need 8 gig + sfp choose CRS, if you prefer 5 gig + 5 fast + sfp choose 2011.
But remember that in 2011 are two different switch chips so you can't bridge gig port witch fast port using hardware chip. In this case it must be done by soft bridge (with hi load on this bridge it will use a lot of CPU resource), this is why CRS109 is located in "switches" section.

Compare the architecture differences. Crs is switch chip connected to cpu but 2011 is cpu with two independent switches. It depends which one will better fit your needs.

Thank you for your replies, and sorry for dummy questions :) Few more questions and that's it :)

1) If I will use only eth1-eth5, is these devices absolutely the same? I mean, will I be able to use "full wire speed" on my network? I am still confused because of @jarda reply:
<..> Crs is switch chip connected to cpu but 2011 is cpu with two independent switches<..>
It sounds like CRS is "switch connected to CPU", while RB2011 is "CPU connected to switch" :) I know it is silly questions, but I need to know if I will use only few gigabit ports, will these devices be the same?

2) I have read from other topic, that CRS will get "free product lifetime upgrades". Is that the same with RB2011?

Thank you for your help!!!

... Two switches independently connected to cpu. But anyway the difference is minor. All actual devices are so far promised to be upgraded for free till their end of life. But you know: life is change.

Seems you don't need anything special so both will do the same for you.

if you don't need 1Gb-speed wire switching, no point in CRS.
difference between 109 and 2011 is: 2011 had CPU with built-in 100Mb switch, bridged to another 1Gb switch, while 109 was had connected CPU to One switch.
both can do things you asked/planned to do.
109..they listed under "switches" cause CPU horsepower and (results of)nature connection of CPU and switch in CRS mean would be less attractive for anyone aimed at routing as main purpose. but practically in case of this model - difference neligible.
they however - had another CRS models, where it bit bumpy ) esp on many-ports devices :)
