Why are so many of the 'good' units, board only?

Tue Feb 10, 2015 8:27 pm

As per title.

e.g. - If you want an affordable Mtk Wireless AC device, there is nothing prebuilt, but they make http://routerboard.com/RB911G-5HPacD and http://routerboard.com/RB922UAGS-5HPacD - the latter of which has better specs than anything up to and including a CRS109 (unless you need multiple ethernet ports)

And if you want a multiport router, the http://routerboard.com/RB850Gx2 seems significantly advanced over the prebuilt offerings.

I understand for those comfortable with assembling their own solution this is not a problem, but some of us like the security (and warranty benefits) of buying a prepackaged solution. So I'm just curious why it seems the preassembled options seem to lag a generation or two behind the board-only options?

Cheers.

It's really strange to be honest.

There have been so many request on this forum for a Dual Band RB 951 on here it's getting silly now and Mikrotik have not even acknowledged that something is in the pipeline to succeed the RB 951.

I've been slowly starting to replace the 951's with a 922 + 2.4Ghz Card Solution for all one of my clients , but I really don't trust that solution in semi open areas like turnstiles or entrances due to high humidity and high dust exposure even inside something like a StationBox.

It's a strange case of a company not wanting your money

We are working on nice indoor devices with dual band and 802.11ac, so don't worry, they will come eventually :)

The RB850Gx2 is available with a case too, by the way.

Thanks, I am aware of that - my point was that you have to buy the unit, case and power supply seperately and assemble. Great if you're a network engineer or electronic hobbyist - not great if you just want to purchase a unit, plug it in and start configuring (like 95% of all people who buy a SOHO router).

Unfortunately RB850GX2 does not have WiFi, not good solution for SOHO since you have to bu another WiFi solution to be connected to the router.

I realize it still may not be what you are looking for, but some MikroTik distributors sell RB850Gx2 pre-assembled with a power supply, so you order one SKU and the product comes to your door, ready to be used right out of the box.

This is something long-awaited! I hope these devices are at least dual (if not quad) -core, since modern routing needs (many clients, 100 or 1000 Mbps links, UHD streaming) cannot easily be covered by single-core designs.
