same SSID, dual band device select 5G first

Thu Feb 25, 2016 11:29 am

At the same SSID and CAPsMAN(wireless-rep), On a board with 2 wifi interfaces ( 2.4 and 5), How can I make a priority to have a dual-band device is connected to the 5G?

For example, when customers walk into the shopping mall, if his phone is dual band, first select the 5G connection.

this is for client to decide. Apple devices always will prefer 5GHz
AP can't control what client will choose

On intel AC card you can prefer 5Ghz AP or 2,4Ghz AP.

Thanks your reply !

In the actual environment, we can not change the client device's settings, but we need a function like this

Band Steering
When activated in the User Interface of an Dual Band Wireless AP, band steering gives the AP the ability to identify dual band clients that have accessed the network and that associated initially to the 2.4 GHz frequency band. The AP quickly shifts, or steers, dual bands client to the less congested, more open 5 GHz frequency band.

Some AP already have this feature like H3C and TP-Link

To "force" client use 5G by deny 2.4G connection. unless too many failed attempted.

We hope that MT may improve the function as soon as possible, if WIRELESS-REP can be done better, because in our cities, in many school projects, which is an essential requirement for them.

Our customers have tested WIRELESS-REP, only Band Steering can not pass the test, so we feel helpless and unfortunately, we like MT, we hope soon in the future, we will can use MT in our projects.

At worst you can set different ssid for 5g and 2g and set up the network priority by that on the clients.

Windows and OSX already prefer 5GHz by default. I don't understand what else are you asking?

In my experience, letting the client decide doesn't always work.

I've deployed many multi-AP, high throughout networks using MT products. Sometimes there are clear client side issues preventing an optional connection but these are usually solved with OS or driver updates.

However, client devices may connect to the 2.4 Ghz band even when they could have a faster connection to the 5 Ghz band. The only solution I've found to provide my clients is to turn of their wireless card off and back on--their device will invariably connect to the 5 Ghz band afterwards.

Many manufacturers offer ways to mitigate this problem...

In Ubiquity, one can manually adjust the beacon interval so that the client sees the 5 Ghz band first.

ASUS uses a technology they developed called SmartConnect:

* https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RTAC ... 87U-sec-05
* http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless ... ing-manual

And there are other examples...

These techniques aren't uncommon--I believe many manufacturers implement them because client devices can oftentimes be unreliable when deciding which band of a wireless network to connect to.

Back to my original statement, many of my clients notice very quickly when their devices aren't connecting at the higher speeds--the client devices are a mix of Mac and Windows, so I don't believe the problem to be platform specific. I've also noticed the same problem on my own Mac laptop at client sites (it will oftentimes connect to the 2.4 Ghz band, after turning its wireless off and back on, it will connect to the 5 Ghz band).

The short if it is that many manufacturers use techniques on the AP themselves to help "steer" clients to a better connection. I agree that it would be nice if MT offered a similar option.

Holding the transmit beacon is listed as part of Ruckus Band Steering.
