Wifi frequency selection and regualtory domain questions

Thu May 26, 2016 8:05 pm

Hi guys,
I have a few questions regarding setting up wireless on RB951 and hAP Lites.

Should I use regulatory domain and select my country or not? Does this actually affects power or not?

What frequency should I actually select, is "auto" ok? Let's say I use the Freq Scanner and 2442 is the least used one, is that ok or should I use only some predefined ones because of issues with some devices. I think some tablets have issues with one of my hAP lite if I select 2417 but ok with 2442.

It depends. When you want to respect the law, of course you should select that.
It is like asking "when the sign along the road says 50, should I respect that or not"?

:D I do respect the law, just wondering if it regulates power and\or frequency available to use.

It does. Of course the limits depend on the selected country.

Do you know if selecting "auto" on the "Frequency" is a good and optimum way or should I manually scan and choose a least used frequency?

There are advantages to both methods. With Auto it should adapt to changing situations, with manual setting you
might be able to do a better job. Whatever you do, only use non-overlapping channels. This means at 2.5 GHz
your channel choice is extremely limited. Only 1 6 11 are usable. In N or AC mode only channel 6.
