wireless-rep with only AP in service?

Mon Jul 04, 2016 4:38 pm

I have installed wireless-rep on a RB951G and configured the main interface as a client
plus a slave interface as an access point:

/interface wireless
set [ find default-name=wlan1 ] band=2ghz-b/g/n country=netherlands disabled=\
    no distance=indoors frequency=2437 frequency-mode=regulatory-domain mode=\
    station-pseudobridge radio-name="N0211" security-profile=Client ssid=\
    Guest wireless-protocol=802.11
add disabled=no mac-address=E6:8D:8C:E5:8D:AB master-interface=wlan1 mode=\
    ap-bridge name=wlan2 security-profile=Accesspoint wds-default-bridge=\
    bridge wps-mode=disabled

This works fine when the radio is connected as a client to the Guest network, it makes
its own AP available (in the config it has an SSID but I see this does not appear in the export!)
Client devices can connect to the AP in that case.
However, when the client loses connection to its network, the AP is not available anymore.
There is no difference between disabled state or "searching for network" state.

Is it not possible to configure wireless-rep in such a way that the AP side continues to work
when the client is not connected?
I obtained this config by using "repeater setup" and then tearing down the bridging, maybe when
I had configured it myself I would have set the AP on the master interface and the client on the
slave.  Is that possible and will that solve the problem?

The reverse setting is more logical. Use Ap directly and client as virtual interface.

Yes, but does it work?
Note that the client must be able to control the frequency of the radio, to match with its access point.
Will the client be able to do that when it is a slave?
Note that the quick setup wizard of a wireless repeater configures it this way, maybe not without reason...
