SXT LTE <-> wAP AC <-> Laptop performance

Mon Aug 15, 2016 12:36 pm

Hi All.

Not sure if this should be in beginner basics (i'm learning or here, so apologies about that !

I am trying to maximise the performance of my devices (as per topic).

With the SXT LTE connected directly via ethernet to my laptop i get the most i would expect out of the LTE:

Testing from EE Mobile (213.205.194.99)...
Selecting best server based on latency...
Hosted by RapidSwitch (Maidenhead) [22.33 km]: 60.87 ms
Testing download speed........................................
Download: 45.71 Mbits/s
Testing upload speed..................................................
Upload: 6.22 Mbits/s

The SXT LTE is configured as per the default, its running on 192.168.88.1, with DNS and DCHP on it ... basic firewall and NAT rules.

LTE signal isnt great, but its doing the job:

# software id = EV9L-N93I
#
status: online
revision: chip:2.0 fw:0.1.2.3
current-operator: 234,30 (ECI 4765442/ eNBI 18615)
current-cellid: 2
earfcn: 1667 (band 3, bandwidth 20Mhz, DL freq 1851.7Mhz)
imei: 356159060277682
imsi: 234304132523119
uicc: 152683354122475246
rssi: -85dBm
rsrp: -118dBm
rsrq: -13dB
sinr: 4dB

I then swap out the ethernet cable from my laptop into a wAP AC, this is configured as a WISP AP in bridge mode, getting its IP from the SXT, WLAN etc is setup as the defaults, and my devices can connect to the WLAN no problems, but performance is speed is consitently ~50% slower on a speedtest:

Testing from EE Mobile (213.205.194.149)...
Selecting best server based on latency...
Hosted by RapidSwitch (Maidenhead) [22.33 km]: 61.333 ms
Testing download speed........................................
Download: 22.75 Mbits/s
Testing upload speed..................................................
Upload: 0.52 Mbits/s

I did initially think it could be a problem with the cables between the SXT and the wAP via the RJ45 connector block, but a bandwidth test between the two shows the results I would expect:

# aug/12/2016 20:50:15 by RouterOS 6.36
# software id = EV9L-N93I
#
status: running
duration: 31s
rx-current: 97.5Mbps
rx-10-second-average: 97.5Mbps
rx-total-average: 82.4Mbps
lost-packets: 882
random-data: no
direction: receive
rx-size: 1500

Can anyone please give me any pointers as to where to look in the wAP config to try to resolve this ? I am sat right next to the AP and the stats for my device connection are good.

Thanks in advance.

Nik

WiFi normally does not yield the performance printed on the box, because that is the line rate and not the
actual throughput. The figure you post is consistent with 802.11b/g. Is your connection 802.11n or AC
so you could expect better performance?

Thanks for the reply, my device is AC, on the little 4G dongle with built in WIFI from the telco company I also get the 40mbit, but there is very little info i can get on what it connects at on the WLAN side.

Anyway good to read that you have a nice connection with the SXE LTE!
Optimizing the local WiFi is not my expertise, I leave it to others to answer that.
However, my experience is that e.g. with 802.11b/g WiFi (54 Mbit/s written on the box),
this 22 Mbit/s performance is what you normally get. With a lot of tweaking maybe 25 Mbit/s.
Of course with newer modes it should be better than that.

Cheers - is that per device or is that shared between devices (again sorry, I'm learning !).

I was thinking maybe by pushing 2 devices on at once i could prove it can hit the 40 !

Another potentially stupid question - sorry !

So on my laptop, I am connecting on the 5Ghz chan and the connection looks good to me ... I would expect more than 20Mbps, am i wrong to expect that ?
