Hiya!
People, and myself, have seen 2 Mikrotik’s close to eachother choose the same frequency when on “Auto” – even when I force a re-scan on both with a 10 second time delay between them (so they don’t do it at the same time).
I found out why;
Am I correct in assuming that the Auto-freq feature is only using the frequency-usage data, and not the signal strength?
Meaning, it will adjust to ALL ssid’s seen, and not just the ones close by?
When I look at channel usage on the routers, the channel selected by auto matched the one with the least traffic.
So far so good.
But the mechanism is completely ignoring signal-strength on the scanned SSID’s.
In my opinion, if the scan-list contains 3 channels (in this example 2412,2437,2462), then only the 2 closest SSID’s should be examined (not freqs, but ssid’s),
So these 3 routers should set themselves to 3 different channels (because the scanlist has 3 possibilities)
Possible solution:
- Scan frequency-usage, still, BUT
- Include signal-strength on nearby SSID’s and weigh this information into the formula
Would reduce/remove the problem?
