Extending wireless on RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN

Tue Jan 24, 2017 11:30 am

I'm fairly new to Mikrotik technologies.

We currently have the wireless interface on this RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN device configured as AP Bridge, which results in all wireless clients connecting to this interface. We're looking to increase number of supported users by adding additional access points. Can someone guide me on how to achieve this. We're checking on the possibility of adding further new Access Points and switching the mode of the on board wireless antennas to station.

Can anyone provide further insight on this please and best practices of achieving this. The setup is fairly simple, we have 1 wireless network (SSID) which is bridged with the LAN.

You could get some WAP-AC (RBwAPG-5HacT2HnD) wich is very good Access Point. Connect on bridge with the other ports in RB2011

Configure CAPSMAN future in RB2011 and set wireless interfaces as CAP.

Thanks @gustavomam for your suggestion.

Would this allow me to control newly added access points from within CAPsMAN even if they are not RBwAPG-5HacT2HnD model?

I'm just checking prior to making any investment in new access points

Yes of course.

All MikroTik model with interface wireless and L4 license will works with Capsman.

Capsman is going to make your life better for sure, adding WIFI device as much as you want.

Oh Ok. So using any generic access point would not be supported by Mikrotik or CAPsMAN ?

No. It have to be RouterOS device in order works.

In the market as far as i know, there is not a multivendor WIFI controller.

All I know are propietary with their brands.

Of course, you van have a mix of Mikrotik AP's, and for example Cisco, Ubiquiti or others, and they will perfectly work. Only the centralized control and "one click" control you will only have over the Mikrotik devices. So if for example you change a password for the AP, that is easy in CAPSMAN, and will work with all attached Mikrotik AP's. And then you have to login individually into the other brands to change it there. If you have a couple of AP's, then it is OK, but if you have ten's or more, that is a nasty job to do (just takes time).

Then you can think and calculate: how many times do I need to change anything on the WiFi part, how much time will it cost with a mixed vendor environment, and how much with Mikrotik only (or Cisco only for example)...
