The difference between mikrotiks AP

Wed Feb 22, 2017 1:16 pm

Hi Im building a home network based on a 3011.
I also need an AP or two. The house is about 95m2, 8x12.5m with basement.
The house is of wood but the walls in the basement is of concrete stones. I mainly use 2.4 ghz, but I would like a good throughput. There will be 2-5 devices connected to the wifi and streaming of video to multiple devices.

Now for the sake of others perhaps it would be good to summarize what the different ap:s that mikrotik has is good for and also consider the price.
How many devices can be connected at once without problem and so on. I also read that it could be better to buy a routerboard with mPCI, what is the pro/con there, which ones are good as ap, price? Also I have an Intel ultimate N 6300 lenovo proprietary under windows but runs good on all mashines under linux, will it work under router os? I have an Atheros wifi abgn mpci card also could I use them with nstream and a routerboard to get an ap?

Thanks

What differences above those described on the product pages do you want to discuss?

I would say that any of our indoor AP devices would work, but since I can't guarantee how the signal will penetrate those walls, I would go for the more powerful hAP ac.

All APs have same unlimited number of allowed connections. Except port speed, output power and number of LAN ports, mostly they are similar.

I could buy 2 hap lite and putting them over the cellar then I think they could penetrate. What is the difference of hap lite RB941-2nD-TC and RB941-2nD (classic) and cAP lite RBcAPL-2nD (poe)?

Hello,

I have same scenario. One RB3011 to manage the LAN and actually have 2 OpenWRT APs to cover all home locations.

The problem is that the roaming is not working. Will RB APs do roaming?

Has RB3011 wireless controller feature?

Kind regards.

Roaming is usually a problem. When you want seamless roaming, you should explicitly mention that and
search for devices that do it. I don't think MikroTik has any devices that do.

If I install 2 ap:s that overlap partially. Is there a problem if they overlap?
Is roaming when moving from one ap to the other?
how does my client behave when using mikroik ap:s that is not roaming?

That will remain a question until you actually try it. It depends on too many factors.

so it will probably be better to install one ap and accept bad reception or is the problems small enough to get two ap:s and good reception everywhere?
what would you recommend?
Or perhaps use a hap ac or wap ac witch has more power?
and there what is the pro/con with wap vs hap ac?

It depends on what you do and what you accept.
When you have 2 AP and the same SSID it will work OK as long as you don't move.
When you walk from one room to the other, it is difficult to predict what will happen.
It could be that the device remains connected to the AP in the first room, clinging to the weak signal still available.
When you disconnect and re-connect, you will probably get the strong AP that is nearby.
But, lots of other things could happen. It could automatically roam from the weak to the strong AP, with shorter
or longer dead time. You never really know until you try. See also the 6.39rc thread.

Take into account that the decision what will happen and how it will happen is on the client only and not on the ap. You can kick off the client with bad signal from ap and disallow to rejoin until the signal level is not good enough, but that is all you can do on ap.
