Let say, at the base station is a radio with high gain antenna transmitter.

It depends on IP Phone antenna as well, if it's weak you won't get link over extremely big distance.

Normally they are quite low-power, due to the small batteries they have. The IP phones I have tried have much shorter range than a regular laptop. The fact that you're running a time-critical application like voice over them reduces your range even more.
