I've been using a RB411UAHR + Dell 5540 modem. The modem supports internet, sms, gps. You can only use one stream at a time, which means you can't sms while browsing internet and so on. I bought a Delock GSM/UMTS swivel antenna, which surprisingly has a higher gain than regular wifi antennas. For a GSM swivel antenna you will need a sma pigtail and not rp-sma. Another Huawei E3131 works fine with my RB951G as failover. Hope this helps.

What features do plan to implement?
Plain modem/router combination is doable out of the box, if your modem is supported.

Note: We'll likely not seeing any multi modem capable devices out of the Routerboard shop...

I wish to use the RB493G or the RB2011UAS-RM and connect the remote branches of banks using combined 2G/3G ( atleast 3 ) USB dongles to connect to central office.

The connection should be running continuous mode and offer atleast 256kbps speed all the time.

How can the above be made possible using RB493G or the RB2011UAS-RM products?

You do not have any other option than to use tunnels (tunnel initiating side at your branch offices). Which type of tunnels to use, it is up to your experience. You have to use ping watchdog per device as well, because GSM is not leased line to guarantee you 24X7 operation and you are likely need to bond/aggregate several modems together as well, just to get some redundancy.

Ding!!! Dong!!!

still awaiting some reply from someone :)

now i am facing a new issue....

i want to connect 2 sites with VPN. i am going to use a cellular provider who will not give me internet connection but just provide me connectivity between this 2 location using their infrastructure which is what i actually want.

the problem starts here :
1. both the locations will have a dynamic IP as i will be connected using a 2G dongle.
2. as i don't have internet i cannot run the DyDNS scripts or service to get the changed IP's
3. i need to get the changed IP's everytime the units connect to the service provider and also use the same to be broadcasted to the each other.
4. basically like trying to establish a VPN on a LAN with all dynamic IP addresses.

please help...someone....

How does the 'direct connection' along with dynamic addresses work exactly. Some part of that connection must be a known in order to make it direct surely (if its dynamic addresses rputed then that's a pretty average service).

If that's the case id look at making a scheduled script on each side to update local address to the known address of the remote in some way (like maybe api call to the remote router to update a variable on the local router) to keep the tunnel updated, then (providing they don't both go unreachable at the same time) they'll always know each others address.

Not sure if any of that helps you or not :-)

*edit- obviously the above theory would need to be manually kick started with entries of current addresses

please help me if with the following scenario:

1. GSM USB modem with Ethernet ( M1 )

2. GSM USB modem with Ethernet ( M2 )

use any of Mikrotik Routerboard with 4 Ethernet Ports

plug M1 and M2 respective in the RB occupying 2 Ethernet ports ( say ETH1 and ETH2 )

bond the 2 Ethernet ports on RB and get a high speed data link on the remaining 2 Ethernet ports ( say ETH3 and ETH4 )

Bonding will not work most probably as it needs also other side support. But you can try load balancing.
